This has always been our go to pub for a pint before theatre, for 15+ years. I won't be ever coming again. A woman came in and went up to the toilets. There was a light festival on, she had a young baby outside with husband and she needed the loo. The manager told her waited until she was in the toilet and then locked the door so that she couldn't leave the pub again. OK, there is a door on the other side of the pub, but it takes you to a different street and she was nipping in away from her family. He was vile to her when she thought she was locked in the pub, refused to unlock the door and said the only exit was the other way. As soon as she had gone he unlocked the door, businesss as usual and suddenly it is an exit again. When I called him out on this, I was asked to leave. His behaviour and abuse of power was absolutely horrible. So I would say to any women or men out there who have any social interest in men not inappropriately using their power to scare women into thinking they're locked in a pub, have your drink elsewhere.
In response to the below: the lady did repeatedly tell you when she was upset and trying to leave by the door that she had a baby and husband right outside it. You ignored her and she was upset. What you choose to do with your CVTV is your concern. The only language used was me at one point saying that the lies being told to defend the situation were bull**. I am sure the cctv you mention would show you locking the lady in and then reopening the door immediately once she had not been allowed to leave and been sent to the other exit. I modified my language at your request and merely pointed out that...
Read moreracist barkeep. i had a very bad experience at this pub. my friend and i were harassed by the barkeep every twenty minutes to buy another drink, during a very quiet night with only a few other customers milling around. he NEVER once went up to other customers to ask them to buy more drinks, but with us, in a very rude manner, would pester us to the point where we felt uncomfortable being there; it was as if we were imposing by our mere presence. eventually this man comes up to us and asks us “girls” to leave “as there are other consumers who want to sit down”. we were shocked! kicked out for literally occupying space in an almost empty pub for lots of “consumers” who didn’t even exist. honestly, he was clearly picking on us as we were the only people of colour in there, i could sense the micro-aggressive behaviour immediately. he never once asked the other white customers to buy more drinks. even they were surprised by the way he spoke to us; a woman nearby asked us if were ok after we were asked to leave! he was rude every single time i went up to the bar to buy another drink and would even belittle me with what i would order - i asked what ginger beer they stocked and he sneeringly replied “ginger beer” as if i was stupid for asking. i have never written a bad review in my life, but this experience definitely warranted one. if you are a person of colour, stay away. not only does this guy have zero customer service skills, he’s also a effin racist. if you think i’m being dramatic, you must not have experienced the sting of not feeling welcome somewhere just for being you. never...
Read moreLovely ambiance and otherwise very intricate and pretty setting, which makes the behaviour from staff all the more disappointing.
My friend and I came in, and she was wearing a bikini top, shorts and clogs (we had just gone on a particularly hot summer’s day walk). We were looking for the toilet, turns out it was customer-only, which was fine by me, so I got us drinks. It was only after we purchased the drinks and she had gone to the toilet, that the bar staff said it was a “no shoes, no top, no service” policy & alleged that the other customers beside us left due of her improper dress. Fair enough, if you have uniform policy in your establishment, but why did you serve her? You couldn’t have mentioned it before? All this did was serve her more stress and anxiety than what it was worth.
And one of the “other customers” was very polite and nice to her, which indicated that they were at least fine with our presence. These were drunk geezers, they could easily be more honest. We only had one drink and then moved on. Whole experience left a foul taste...
