King Street Raj — Restaurant in Bristol

I went there last Friday around 10.45 looking forward to a curry after watching a show, we went downstairs just Behind a couple that got greeted and a table offered we waited to be seated but to be told there wasn't any tables left I could see two that were empty and I mentioned this to him but was told we are closing and we could get a takeaway so we decided to order a takeaway because they would be closing but about five minutes later a group of 6 came downstairs to be offered a table I couldn't belive what I was seeing because we were told there was no tables free and they were closing in 15 minutes I tried to get the attention of the staff member that had lied to me but he kept disappearing, we were still sat there when 2 blokes came in and I said u won't get a table they are closing and it's just takeaway to my surprise they were shown to a table I thought is this some sort of joke I was so mad at this point and asked to speak to the manager who did come out to speak to me and was apologiseing for the misunderstanding I said I've been lied to not once but twice and I'm not happy at how I've been treated he gave me a beer and said he would get me a table a..s.p to which I replied its too late and I didn't want a table now and I would be writing a review about how I've been treated and lied to and how unhappy I was being treated like this for no reason, he said please don't write a review and when I come in again he would give me 25% off my bill and a bottle of wine If I don't write about this, i said its not about having money of my bill and the wine ,its the fact that I don't like being lied to and treated so badly I still can't understand why this happened. I was very polite and wasn't drunk all I wanted was to have a table and a nice curry, i told him I would always go to my favourite Indian urban tandoori in small street where they are so friendly and welcoming and go out their way for every customer ,but I had gone to a show this end of town so decided to give this resurarant a try to be treated like this. He kept saying sorry and he would speak to the staff member about this and he looks forward to seeing me again, I got my takeaway and said I don't think I will be back even for a free bottle of cheap wine and money of my bill I would rather not give them my custom. Considering it was a Friday night on King Street - home of many fine drinking emporiums - the restaurant had a pleasant busy atmosphere that was not at all lairy (which by the process of elimination may have made us the lairy ones!). The drinks were the standard Cobra or Kingfisher.

The menu selection was really impressive and the choice of the meats with the sauces were good. Naan and rice options were all good although; the naan bread was soft and for a garlic naan was not swimming in garlic.

Booking the table was simple using an online form so we were easily in and seated.

The reason for not rating this any higher is because the sauce was ridiculously and unpleasantly spicy. My choice was a dhansak which had a one chili rating one the menu which is what I'd usually go for. It was presented as a "vindaloo strength" for some reason which I thought was a joke but the heat was ridiculous as if they had intentionally gone for a full on 3 chili strength which I absolutely didn't want. The sauce was very tasty before the heat kicked in and unfortunately I had to leave a good amount of it. I wish I'd actually asked for a replacement. I went with a friend and former colleague who proudly considers himself a bit of a curry expert—so the bar was set high from the start.

We ordered the lamb pasanda, chicken dhansak, and keema naan—and every dish delivered. A special mention has to go to Ali, who gave us some great advice on the menu. He recommended having lamb with the pasanda, and his suggestion was spot on.

The lamb pasanda: tender tender tender!!!! The sauce was rich and velvety, made with ground almonds and cream, with a lovely subtle nuttiness and a touch of sweetness that perfectly complemented the lamb. It was indulgent without being heavy, and absolutely brimming with flavour.

The chicken dhansak had that proper balance of sweet, sour, and spice, with rich lentils that gave it great depth. The keema naan was excellent—fresh, generously stuffed, and just crisp enough on the outside to scoop up every last bit of curry.

My curry-loving friend gave it a big thumbs up, which says a lot! And having someone like Ali on hand, offering genuine insight and recommendations, added a real sense of care and class to the whole experience. It’s not just great food—it’s thoughtful service too. Will definitely be back.
