I am completely baffled at the reviews I’m reading here. This is quite possibly the most unwelcoming pub I’ve ever been to. None of us had eaten all day so when we came in we were starving and excited because the reviews of The Mill were good.
3 of us got the fish and chips and 3 of us got the steak and chips.
When the food arrived we asked the server for sauces. He said what do you want vinegar ketchup mayo and we said all please.
He scoffed and rolled his eyes and stormed in to the kitchen. It was truly bizarre, he slammed down vinegar and then came back with one thimble of mayo and one of ketchup. We said thank you would it be possible to get more ketchup and mayo (as a table of 6 a completely reasonable request). He huffed off and came back with one more. We all felt very uncomfortable and a bit confused at the response to us politely asking for sauce… in a pub…that serves chips? However the only reasonable explanation is that it was his personal ketchup and mayo, if that was the case then fair enough.
The atmosphere was just a bit weird, the original server came over later and another member of staff came to check on us but it was a bit beyond.
We weren’t anticipating gourmet but a reasonable expectation was solid pub food.
The steak was tough as leather, chips were fine. Not really much evidence of garlic butter.
The haddock and chips came with tartar sauce, curry sauce and mushy peas.
The fish didn’t taste of anything which was a shame. The chips were fine.
The peas were small (think thimble rather than a pot) and runny. Again they didn’t taste of anything and the texture was off.
The curry sauce was inedible. I don’t know what happened, if it was turned or if no one has ever tasted it in the kitchen but it was awful. It was sour but the texture was split, I’m unsure how curry sauce could go so wrong but I think it is better to leave off the menu altogether.
What I will say though, is that the tartar sauce was very very good. I just wasn’t expecting tartar sauce to be the best part of the meal.
This place is a pay at the bar before the meal establishment so complaining or raising concerns during the meal felt fruitless especially when the reception before we’d eaten was already odd. I’m not confident that any complaint would not result in un-tampered with food.
Honestly avoid and go to literally any other puband take the extra £10-20 on the chin for...

I came here for Sunday Roast with my mum as it had good reviews and was highlighted by several articles for its Sunday Roast. However, it was a very disappointing meal. My mum had the Roast beef while I had a vegan roast. She was disappointed with her Roast beef, it was below average to her – not tasty and quite tough. The vegan roast I had was disappointing too – it was just this little tartlet of veg and nut stuffing that was very dry and a bit burnt. The Yorkshire pudding was not great either. They were generous with the trimmings, but it doesn’t make up for the small vegan roast tartlet I got.
This could be a one-off experience as most reviews has been positive. However, we were the first customers of the day, and it wasn’t busy when we ordered and ate there so… there is no excuse for the poor food quality and cold service. The staff were cold and disinterested. When we walked in, we weren’t greeted by anyone. We felt so unwelcomed. I asked if they were open and the girl at the bar said yes… then continued on with her business, not bothered to welcome us or ask us anything else. So, I asked if we could just sit anywhere (and mentioned that we were there for lunch), and she answered yes. So, we just sat at a table, not knowing that we were meant to order at the bar (I only came to realise this after 5 minutes and not being served). After we were served our food, no one came to check up on us or such either.
From my experience of having Sunday Roast in the afternoon when it wasn’t busy, we had below average food and cold treatment from disinterested staff, I will not be returning to The Mill and wouldn’t recommend it especially when you can find better food and service a...
Read moreThis is a perfect example of a mediocre pub sitting on its laurels in an idyllic location.
The atmosphere is difficult to describe. It is too cold in winter and too dark in summer. Best to visit in spring, summer and autumn and enjoy the bridge over the cam outside. That's the only reason to visit. Avoid in the winter.
There is a decent variety of birth keg and cask beers; however, they are extremely expensive.
My partner ordered the Cajun Chicken sandwich. It was terrible. The quality of the chicken was poor, there was lots of gristle and cartilage; it certainly wasn't breast or thigh meat. There was no flavour other than the mayonnaise and it was served very cold. When we provided this feedback to the staff we were told that this is the way they store the chicken. I've had catering jobs and recognize the safety requirements when preparing and storing poultry; however I do not think it is unreasonable to expect food to be prepared fresh or at least served around room temperature. My partner could not finish her meal. We were not offered a replacement meal or a partial refund.
The cheeseburger is satisfactory. They use Monterey Jack cheese, which I like but may not be to your preference. There are much better burgers in Cambridge.
The staff are surly and somewhat rude, however, I suspect this may be because they are rushed and understaffed. If a barrel needs replacing this can and often does put service out of action for up to 10 minutes.
It's such a shame that so many of the pubs in Cambridge's most perfect locations are so underwhelming. Looking at you too, Fort St George. Better local alternatives include The Anchor on Silver St and Millworks...
