I had a great time during my visit at the Granta. I had already visited the pub in the recent past, but this time was more special as I spent the whole night with special people.

Everything was really nice: the location, which is near where I usually stay during the day; the ambient, which is cozy, warm and comfortable; the staff, who was friendly and efficient; and the food, which was tasty, especially the seasoned fries, despite the burger's meat being a little bit hard. The only downside, I think, is being a little pricey (even with student discount).

I visited the pub during the night, but I think that it must have an astonishing view of the Cam river during the day, especially during punting activities.

When I first looked at the physical menu, I was surprised by the similarity with another pub's menu, Fort St George, which is essentially identical. Then I realised that both pubs are owned by the same holding, Greene King in this case. This is not immediately obvious if you don't know the story behind pubs at Cambridge. Coincidentally or not, the hard burger's meat was the same at the other pub 😅

I would say this pub is really cool and cozy. I recommend it to anyone looking for a nice pub at Cambridge and I intend to return in the...

Lovely couple of hours over lunchtime spent outside by the river. Great staff, friendly and helpful with stuff like dog water bowls and extra toast for the meal. Food good. New menu since I last came, slightly expensive but different menu. Chicken liver parfait was pronounced good but nowhere near enough toast (bit of butter may have also been appreciated) and the poached eggs and avocado on toast although really nice, would have been lovely had the avocado not been so cold. This had the effect of completely chilling the otherwise perfectly poached eggs and the toast so let the meal down slightly. Room temp avocado would have made it much nicer. Time of day meant that I kept to a half of Neck Oil but could happily have stayed and drunk more. Thanks

Update Jan 2022 - went again with a different friend and couldn't resist the eggs and avocado a second time. Thank you so much for listening as the avocado was a perfect temperature. The scotch egg also met with approval. Only issue this time was the wait. Not a problem for us as we had time but think the table next to us had to give up. Completely understand staffing issues at the mo but it wasn't remotely busy....

Sadly the food was poor. Our friend is gluten free and there was little for her to choose from. She did go for the steak, but couldn’t have the onion rings. Her plate was very bland with steak, chips and tomatoes. With a little imagination the chef could have added mushrooms, salad leaves, coleslaw etc. i had chicken kiev but it was over cooked and the salad that came with it was lettuce and a bit of cheese? The one gluten free dessert there was, Eton Mess, wasn’t available as they’d run out of cream. My friend therefore had ice cream, only vanilla available but it was promised with chocolate sauce. One small scoop of vanilla ice cream was served with no sauce for £5.95! We did ask for sauce and the waiter did go back and get some. Such a shame because it’s a lovely location with river and mill pond views. The front of house staff were very pleasant and efficient but for the money the food was...

Firstly, the service was subpar as the table remained uncleaned despite multiple waiters passing by. Furthermore, I was left waiting for over half an hour just to receive a starter, which is simply unacceptable. Moreover, the atmosphere of the restaurant was severely lacking. The only positive aspect was the presence of sunlight, as everything else failed to contribute to a pleasant dining experience. Lastly, the quality of the food was extremely disappointing. The halloumi, in particular, was tasteless and left me feeling unsatisfied. It felt like a complete waste of space in my stomach. Overall, I regret to say that this dining experience fell far below my expectations. The lackluster service, uninspiring atmosphere, and underwhelming food quality make it difficult for me to recommend this establishment to others.

Last time I came to the Granta was about 4 years ago and there have been a few changes. The terraced area is good, with separate smoking and non smoking areas and a sheltered section. It's now table service which is great, if you can get somebody's attention. If you get the wrong staff member they will get someone else for you. Drinks are delivered pretty quickly so no problem there. I ordered the Caesar salad with extra chicken with a 4 pound extra charge. The food took about 40mins to arrive and the lettuce part was quite delicious, the chicken (of which there were two chunky but small pieces, was incredibly dry. Very disappointing. No food complaints from my companion. As always the views are lovely, and without them it would be a high 2 stars.
