AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Dive bar with mould on the walls and filthy venetian blinds which they keep closed to hide the fact that they stay open well after the legally authorized hours. Major generator of noise pollution for the environs. The residents (myself included) are constantly on the phone with the police and the City Council with complaints because, in addition to all the noise, they have to clean up vomit and/or blood and pick up empty bottles, cigarette butts, and beer cups strewn along the residential street connected to this corner bar on a regular basis from the local drunks and after-hour boisterous patrons who migrate to this spot. There are children, handicapped, and elderly who live on the residential street near this pub and are subjected to this noise, street drinking, bar fights, etc. Not to mention the other residents whose well-being is also negatively impacted by sleep disruption from this uncivil behaviour. Don't be a part of the problem, stay away! See photo taken January 2024 with vomit outside, a typical night. Sometimes it's cigarettes butts and beer bottles, sometimes its blood, that night it...
Read moreThe Tourmalet is a bit of European charm, hidden just off Leith Walk.
On Buchanan Street you can find The Tourmalet, a cosy little pub stuffed with European feeling.
Its name is from Col du Tourmalet, one of the hardest climbs of the Tour De France, and the bar is decorated with lots of cycling memorabilia, as well as an aquarium, a giant gorilla statue and other bijou odds and ends.
But while the feeling might be continental, the beer is decidedly Germanic. There is much Dunkel to be had, exported dark German lager. Mr Skinner drank Göller Kaiser Heinrich Urweisse Hell, a sweet wheat beer, yellow and fruity. I had Tegernseer Dunkel Export, a sweet, dark caramel lager. Both were excellent, and both were chosen on the recommendation of the bar staff – always a good sign.
Like The Regent, The Tourmalet is dog friendly, and they have a deal with a local pizzeria Origano for inexpensive food options. Brightly decorated, lots brown beer and brilliant bar staff – definitely more laid-back...
Read moreLove this quirky bicycle themed pub! So much so, I've added to it to my personal list of fave locals! I was always curious about this brightly painted pub which opened in back in 2009, I just don't know it took me so long to venture into it?! It's a niche bar, specialising in German weissbier and boy, do they know their stuff! The bar staff are always super friendly and happy to recommend their latest German beer to suit your taste. The beers change often so you'll always find something new.
As well as loving bikes and German beer... they love dogs too! I've never been in here and not seen a furry four legged friend. There's lots of unique memorabilia on the walls to keep you distracted and a fish tank too. The pub has a friendly loyal but diverse group of followers and Tourmalet have made it a welcoming cosy space for everyone. Thankfully you can leave the cycling shorts at home in order to be...
