We attended for an early dinner as a group of 7 on Father’s Day. We have been to this establishment many times previously, we therefore booked at a time we knew would be quieter. We were shown to our table by a lovely front of house member and that was where the pleasant experience ended. We were served by 2 of the waiting staff and neither cracked a smile for the duration. They were borderline rude and completely despondent. Tween they can for our orders there were no pleasantries or smiles. We were asked “what do you want” and that was all we heard from the server. When we flagged down the waitress for additional beverages (because we were never asked if we wanted anything else beyond the initial order) we actually received a grunt of recognition. The server dropped plates, cutlery and sauce when clearing plates - accidents are completely normal and expected but it was the sheer lack of care and zero apologies whilst we were splashed with gravy. When she returned to take dessert orders I asked for a few more moments please as my child was still deciding. We then waited 20 minutes for her to return. The restaurant was quiet, there were more staff in the building than diners. When we attempted to flag her down she walked past us to go sit at the bar with her phone, laughing with the barman. Had I not had 2 children with me whom had already decided on desserts, we would have just walked out. She then approached us visibly irritated by us asking to place our orders, took them down without a word and we overheard her moan to another staff member about how long we had taken - bearing in mind it was the server who left us sitting for extended periods to play on her phone. Our bill was £350, £30+ was service charge despite there being quite literally no service beyond throwing food in our direction. Upon payment of a rather reasonable bill, we will received no smile, no thank you or even have a nice day - she said “right that’s gone through” and proceeded to walk away. No one asked if our food was pleasant or if we needed anything throughout - there are many, many lovely dining establishments in Edinburgh at similar price points. I would recommend anyone choose another option unless you like to be ignored, grunted at and splashed with gravy without so much as an apology for...
Read moreTook my mum as a late Mothers Day present, its very nice inside. It was easy to book and they were very accommodating for certain dietary requirements we had. On the day my sister was running late and the staff were helpful and allowed us a little extra time over the usual 2 hour booking slot to accommodate this. We had a few cocktails while we waited which were delicious, but a little pricey. I would definitely recommend the pineapple upside down one, it was sweet and perfect!! The staff were okay, however we were sat in an area that was off to one side so it was difficult to catch anyones attention and we did occasionally feel a little abandoned haha! The afternoon tea itself was fine, the savoury options were lovely, the little filled rolls and sandwiches and tarts were all nice and for my mum the vegetarian options were all nicely thought out and tasted great. The scones were probably my least favourite part, although they were served warm which I loved they were quite dense and a little doughy. The other sweet treats were nice enough, there was a tropical mousse one that was very tasty although difficult to pick up, could maybe have done with a little cake server for some of the sweets. The sponge cake was nice but quite sweet. The rest were a little bland but by no means inedible! The only other thing that let it down was the tea itself, I'm not sure who made it but it was terrible. The pots were barely half filled with water and yet there were so many tea leaves in it that it was possibly the strongest tea I've ever had! My sister had a fruit tea which was much nicer as the pot was filled to the top and was made with a bag instead of loose leaf. We asked for extra water which helped but it still wasn't very nice tasting and left a bad taste in my mouth.
Overall, for the price I expected a little more but it was nice, the service and the tea let it down a little but I understand off-days so I would still recommend giving it a go if you are an...
Read moreMost staff were very friendly and sweet, especially the foreign lady in her early 40s? she was very welcoming and went above and beyond to cater to one of our group who had allergies. There was one younger blonde girl who was being very rude/sharp to the other staff, she also brought food to our table at one point and was very short with us, just unacceptable.
As for the food, desserts were fantastic, Clementine Posset was exceptional, Christmas pudding was delicious and beautifully served. Unfortunately the rest of the meal was not quite up to the standard I'd expect at this price point. Salmon - dry/overcooked, served with 3 tiny roasted potatoes, depressing for a 'Christmas dinner' Braised beef, succulent, tasty but again a tiny portion and a piss poor display of mashed potatoes on the side. I didn't try the rest of my groups meals but many had similar complaints.
The cocktails were the worst I've ever had for the price, absolutely tiny, less than 100ml in them altogether with one measly measure of alcohol for something like £13? I've happily paid more than £20 for a cocktail before but it was priced accordingly... I'd have been disappointed if these were less than £5 to be honest. I genuinely mean it, worst cocktails I've ever tried for the price.
Disappointing altogether, I don't know if this place can get away with falling standards as it's guaranteed a certain stream of customers during the holidays but I unfortunately have to say I can't recommend this establishment to friends and family in the area and that goes for anyone visiting the city too, plenty...
