Coates Cafe — Restaurant in City of Edinburgh

This is a cafe that cares more about money than customer service. There were very few customers but our party had to wait so long for our food that one person requested a refund. Those of us who were (eventually) served received over-cooked, yet somehow barely warm food, missing components and, inexplicably, salad (!) with vinaigrette dressing on the side of a full breakfast! When asked to replace the missing elements of our orders we were questioned as to whether we had paid for what we were claiming was missing. Even when presented with Apple Pay transactions confirming the amounts paid, the staff continued to dispute what was being requested; we’re talking about a pot of tea in one instance, which amounted to a single tea bag in a tea-pot of hot water, for which £3.10p was paid, but it felt like we were asking for a free steak dinner! Even a basic level of customer service would have resulted in just one staff member saying “It’s one tea bag and some water, I’ll replace it no problem.”

It would have been understandable - to a degree - if the staff were rushed off their feet but there were barely any other customers in the cafe at the time our group were being served. So there are no excuses and it was sheer incompetence all round.

We definitely won’t be back and I would urge anyone else...

Lovely cafe with enough space and seats for everyone. The staff is very friendly and you can see they love to make coffee and cakes for you. The interiour is really special and I really loved it. The seats the lights the sofa all has a special touch and you will feel so comfortable when you enter this cafe. The cappuccino was delicious too and I need to mention that the portion is really big compared to other cafes. The almond cake was awesome too and I would eat it again and again. The location is near the haymarket and what I also love is that you can spend alot time here watching from the window. All in all I can recommend this place to everyone and I would definitely come again. Everything is perfect the price the taste the staff and the furniture. I will definitely come again....

The first time we came here I had an amazing English breakfast, honestly one of the best of my entire life. I was very happy with it.

A while ago, I was craving a brunch again and since I was very satisfied with the previous experience here, we decided to come back. Unfortunately this time it was not as good as the first time, the poached eggs with smoked salmon were not that great, the bread wasn't properly toasted and the sauce was not that good.

Although this time it was not great, the staff is always very kind, the atmosphere is very cozy and we really like place. They have a lot of cakes too and we really would like to taste them. Yes, we will come back! Bad days happen, no problems!
