My partner and I took her parents to Pataka over the weekend and we enjoyed a truly exceptional Indian meal. One of the finest Indian & Bengali restaurants in Edinburgh.
The menu is extensive, with familiar classics and many unusual options not widely available. The service was quick and plenty of staff were ever present to deal with any concerns with a smile. The food was first class; my Chicken Madras, sada rice, and garlic naan was the best I've ever eaten and my companions were equally impressed. The prices are reasonable and, even without a starter or dessert, we were pleasantly full by the end of the evening.
The restaurant itself is decorated in a Charles Rennie Mackintosh theme (possibly an old CRM 'tea room'), with stained glass windows and CRM prints distributed on the panelled interior walls. The place settings and coasters also followed this delightful motif.
The restaurant is not open during the day, so I'd recommend leaving plenty of time to book a table, which seemed necessary as the restaurant was lively and full for most of the evening. Pataka also offers a takeaway service which we look forward to trying...
Read moreMy wife and I ordered a collection from Pataka the other week. We had heard good things and we weren’t disappointed. The menu is vast but I like how they have recommendations on their website to help you decide. My wife went with the lamb Pasanda and I went with the Royal Murgha which was a recommendation. We got the Pataka Assorted Kebabs to share and boiled rice and a couple of naans. We ordered on the phone which was easy. I went in to collect. I was a little early but the staff were very friendly and welcoming. They even gave us free poppadoms since it was our first time. I am afraid I can’t give a score for the atmosphere because we didn’t sit in but it seemed nice. The shop is small but nice. The food stayed warm when we got home. All the food was really tasty. Excellent flavours. We really loved the dips that came with the popadoms. My wife’s Pasanda was nice although she did think that the lamb was a little on the dry side but still enjoyable. Next time we would like to sit in because the food is always...
Read moreStarters looking sad and mediocre. Rice served cold! the rice we got from the Chinese on our way back home was hotter on our arrival at home! Portions small, 6 pieces of Chicken served were dry and not fresh, I had to spit the second piece in my napkin and stop eating. The sauce was with no flavour, for the first time ever in my life I had to add salt and it didn't help. My partner ate his as it wasn't that bad and was starving. But he agreed that it was one of his worst Indian ever and that mine was terrible. I told all the above to waiter, he offered to bring another one, I declined. When paying the bill he pointed out that he had removed my dish, to which I replied, of course you have as it...
