Had a brilliant meal at Abbotsford Bar on Rose street…Waiter/waitress was lovely. However, when I tried to book table 2 days prior to this, I initially asked for a table for 10 people, I was told this was not possible as they cannot accommodate a table of 10. I asked if I could book 2 tables of 5 and was advised to book online… So I did… I called back to check i had done this properly and was informed that I had but was told….. You will NOT get tables next to each other, if you come in and ask you will be told a firm NO! I was then informed we have tables at opposite sides of the restaurant, as booking system had already allocated them, and was also told we can NOT mingle with each other! It was explained the reason they couldn’t accommodate a table of 10 was due to having a small kitchen and food couldn’t be served at the same time!! I said this was fine I understand… On arrival we were opposite sides of the restaurant which was about only 20/30 feet. There was about 4-5 empty tables in between us. 1 couple arrived who didn’t have a reservation and was accommodated. There was a table for 4 next to us which had “reserved” sign on it but no one turned up… Before leaving we enquired why they could not have had us sitting next to each other when tables were free and was told “it’s the computer booking system” I reiterated the conversation I had on the phone and was told “that wasn’t me that was the manager” who is called Rob! But strangely on arrival my friend asked if we could be seated nearer and was told “as I said to the person that called this can’t be done” The fact they blamed the computer system dumbfounds me. What happened to customer care!! I’m assuming working in a restaurant you are able to accommodate customers and allocate tables NOT be controlled by a computer!! Very disappointing and unnecessary!!! You advertise a “friendly professional “ service … friendly waiter/waitress...

Title: Disappointing Experience at The Abbotsford Bar & Restaurant

I recently visited The Abbotsford Bar & Restaurant, and unfortunately, my experience was a letdown. As someone who appreciates good food and drink, I was disappointed with the quality of both.

Food The food was very average and lacked flavor. I ordered a dish that I've had many times before, but this version was uninspiring and unappetizing. The ingredients seemed bland, and the presentation was unimpressive. I was expecting more from a restaurant with such a reputation.

Drink The beer was not to my taste at all. I tried a few different options, but none of them impressed me. The selection was limited, and the quality was subpar. As someone who enjoys a good pint, I was disappointed by the lack of flavor and depth in the beers on offer.

Service The service was friendly, but it couldn't make up for the poor food and drink. Our server was attentive and polite, but the kitchen seemed slow, and the food took a while to arrive.

Conclusion Overall, my experience at The Abbotsford Bar & Restaurant was disappointing. The food was average, the drink was subpar, and the service, although friendly, couldn't compensate for the kitchen's shortcomings. Unless they improve their menu and beer selection, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

The pub downstairs doesn’t serve under 18, FYI. However, the upstairs restaurant is quaint and has a neat little bar in the middle. We got off to a bumpy start as there are five in our party. The server didn’t seem interested in accommodating us at all, and initially turned us away. (Despite the fact that there was one table of people eating.) I’m not entirely sure why she came back and stopped us leaving to tell us she could push two tables together. But, she did. And we proceeded to have the worst service we have had in the UK. And that is unfortunate because the food was really quite tasty. (With the exception of lukewarm cock’a’leekie soup, which still tasted good.) get the haddock and chips. According to two in our party, some of the best they’ve had this trip! The tagliatelle with mushrooms/spinach/artichokes was tasty. My husband felt that we were treated the way we were because we are Americans, as the “natives” or at the very least; non-Americans, were treated noticeably different from us. It seemed apparent that they had zero interest in serving “tourists.” So, we will mark this off our lists of places...

This wonderful restaurant is tucked up above a loud pub. The setting looks a bit austere, but most people dining wore casual attire. The service was top notch, very friendly. We had beer and cider and ordered the haggis, tatties, and needs appetizer. This was our second haggis. It’s been great both times, but theirs was especially good, with refreshingly present spice (nutmeg and maybe mace, I’m guessing). My husband’s main dish was the Caesar salad with lots of chicken, maybe two breasts, and actual strips of anchovies. He found it excellent. I opted for the wild mushroom risotto, which was incredibly good. In addition to the mushrooms--which included some adorable little ones with stems--there were tomato chunks and leek. Everything was delightfully fresh. We left stuffed and happy.

You don't often find nice, authentic and affordable pubs, especially not in Edinburgh City centre! The Abbotsford was an amazing find, and while I doubt it's a hidden gem being on Rose Street, it definitely is a gem! Beautiful setting with a bit of old world charm but modern food, drinks and importantly, service. The whisky selection was amazing, great variety, and very reasonable prices. Plus they serve Raasay whisky so that's a massive tick in the win column for me! We decided on a light bite and shared a few sharing plates. The food was really tasty and we were impressed with the quality. Overall a highly recommended, fun, unpretentious, touch of old school cool in Edinburgh City centre. We shall return!
