Popped in here the other day, very nice place, the only reason it is getting low stars is the pricing, first pint of Cromarty Ghost Town was £4.95 this was the price on the board and the price under the tap, and double checked with the staff that this was the correct price, the next pint was charged at £5.50!!! for the same pint, and I know this was charged at this price as I was standing right in front of the till and could see what was being charged. We are from the U.S. and are staying in Edinburgh for a few days. We have visited The Empress twice in the past 24 hours and can honestly say this is one of the best bars we have ever been to. Went for few beers. The place has apparently gone through some renovation at some point and maybe try to be a bit newer wave hipsterish place - like the older members of our group said. Customers seemed to be a mixture of older and younger. If partly slightly odd looking, still cosy and quite small place. Best of all, quite good beer selection consisting of a bit of something for everyone - from basic draught lagers to few cask ales and few craft taps...
