After exploring Dover Castle in awful weather, we were very much looking forward to grabbing a bite at the cafe. Unfortunately, we arrived around 2.30pm and the experience was disappointing.
The queue was extremely long, and it was clear the staff members on duty were struggling to cope with the high volume of customers. We appreciate that this can be a difficult situation, but as we got to the front of the line, the selection of food was very limited. I wasn't aware that they weren't serving hot food anymore.
When I asked about the availability of a few hot food options, the staff member replied to each question with "we don't have it." After the third time, she added, with a poor attitude, "well, have you seen what time it is?" This kind of comment from a service professional is not very empathetic and not appreciated, regardless of the time of day.
In the end, we settled for two subpar cold sandwiches and two hot beverages, which came to over £16. While the prices are comparable to places like Pret, the quality and quantity of the food and drinks were far from it. For what we paid, it was deeply disappointing.
This is unfortunately not my first disappointing experience with an English Heritage food venue, and I will be avoiding them...
