Lovely pub in a very strategic place, just underneath the Dover Castle and reasonable walking distance to the White Cliffs. The staff are all very cheerful, however the customer service is questionable to say the least. I joined my friends who were sitting at the table since about 5pm after a walk on the cliffs and after taking a drink I decided to order some food which took nearly half hour to arrive despite a semi empty pub.
Eventually the food arrived, however, literally a minute later (I ate 2 chips numbered), a staff member came to our table to advise we'd have to leave the table soon as the table was reserved and when we asked if we could move behind or elsewhere, he advised first it was not possible. We were just buffled, why serve me the food or even not advising me attractive ordering time (I'd have given up then), my friends were at that table since 5pm, it was nearly 7pm by then, why could they not have advised us before?! I was quite upset, tired, starving, my good there and not able to eat it...my friends and I all pointed this out and he then offered us a tiny table for 3 (we were 6), where to eat my food bearing in mind that was reserved too...I did not want to gulp my good down my throat, I wanted to relax & enjoy it!!!
...the chap just kept apologising but was getting more and more agitated and scratchy to which point. He offered a refund, I found it a bit of a joke, after not advising from the start and after nearly 30 minutes of waiting time, to be given the sweets only to take it back right away?
I set mi mind on that food and did not want it to end in the rubbish bin, refund or not.
I asked if I could have my food wrapped do I could bring it home, I did not want to be there one more minute. I did not argue with him, nor my friends did, we just made our point, it would not have been polite and did not want to go below our standards.
I will definitely not going back to this place, it is all good for them to take our money but not give some very basic customer service...the pub in front of the station we went soon after...they have some very happy customers instead, what a difference it made, only a few minutes away
It have given 0 point if it was solely for the...
Read moreOk. I hate to leave a low review, but I don't appreciate being lied to. First off, it is a charming English pub. The staff seemed very friendly and drinks were good. In fact our burgers were quite good as well. So, what is my complaint then, you might ask? Well, when we first arrived at about 5:45 PM, even though the place was not at all busy, we were told they had no food left except pizza and burgers. They said fish and chips were unavailable. We were disappointed but decided to order burgers. Well, when I went back for a second beer to the bar, I noticed one of the ladies behind the bar quickly shooing away the other who had, lo and behold, in her hands, two big plates of fish and chips. It was obvious she did not want us to see this. Now, by this time, we had already been there well over 30 minutes and, only one couple came in whilst we were sitting there and sat in another room. Were the fish and chips for them because they were friends with the staff?Everyone else had already cleared out. So, why were we told they had no fish and chips or anything else except for burgers and pizza? Our burgers took a very long time to make, by the way. I noted that someone who was most likely the cook had time to stand around behind the bar with the two ladies working there as well. Also, no fewer than 4 other couples came in after we arrived and were told they were completely out of food. They left. I did not feel those entrusted to work this pub are doing the owner right as, most likely, these young people were hoping to shoo away customers so they could go home early for the evening. If, by chance, the owner was present, I predict he will be out of business soon if he doesn't learn to value and take care of...
Read moreThis might be Dovers oldest pub, and to be honest, it should be taken into the yard and shot to put it out of its misery. We were quite eager to try the food as it's advertised as "home made" and "fresh" I ordered the home made chicken curry. This sounded particularly enticing with the balance of spices and herbs. Don't be fooled by the description. Alarm bells rang when my meal was brought to the table with the proud statement of "this was cooked fresh this morning." This is apposed to what? What I received was dry chicken in a lacklustre sauce, probably mixed by random choice of Tesco own spices by a five year old at playgroup. It had all the delicate balance of a one legged donkey, on a see saw atop a climbing frame in a force nine gale. The meagre portion was my first concern, so I asked for a little more than the two spoonfuls of plain boiled rice. I was told the unfortunately that was the size of the portion that comes in the bag, and if I wanted more, I would have to pay for it. The naan was in some way classed as a kind of bread from a packet again from Tesco. As a fresh home cooked meal, I question the validity of that statement. As a curry, I question the chef and where he or she found the spices. Not a pleasant experience. Award winning this is not, unless the playschool teacher gave a gold star to the five year old out of pity.
Note: No Tesco store was harmed in the writing of this review and other supermarkets are available.
No chef was made to work hard or even at all in the making of this curry. That is excluding pressing buttons on the microwave to warm the...
