Friends rave about this place but we had not had the chance to go. Being local you nearly always think we will go out of season. But....some guys and gals at work decided it would be good. I really wasn't what my wife and I expected. Although we had pre-booked because there was a fairly large group of us, the table wasn't ready. No biggie. Then they wanted people to sit at the narrow ends of our tables. Not the most comfortable but why should people who pay the same as others only to be squished in? It wasn't us but it meant six of our party would be squished for the evening. Other parties didn't seem bothered but we are all different. Three large parties in the conservatory type area we were in. The noise levels were horrendous but I guess you're gonna be unlucky sometimes when you go out. Unfortunately the waitress wasn't having a good night and spilt red wine down the back of one of our party. So down her, her jacket on the back of the chair and her leather handbag. Unfortunate and an accident. But you can see a list forming here. Some food had to go back cold, some food wasn't up to par, including my dear wife's. I had pizza and it was spot on. Hence I wouldn't give 5 stars but also not 1 star. I'm sure it would be loads better on a night that was so exceptionally busy. Thing is they have another establishment in Chapel and it's amazing 6 out of 5 stars all the way. Everyone is allowed a bad night. We will go back and try on a night less popular and a smaller party. I always give an honest opinion in light of the way we see things at that moment. We would have spoken to them on the night but they were rammed and one or two staff were having a bad night bless them. My pizza was really nice. When we go back I will amend my post accordingly. No offence was meant just a true reflection...
Read moreMy son & I visited last week for an evening meal (5.15pm) before catching our train home. We were seated in the conservatory, which was a nice open area to sit in. Service initially was quick to take our drinks orders and then food order, but ...
The guy taking our food order seemed surprised that we only ordered one main (chicken dish) and one starter (BBQ Ribs) to have at the same time, his comment was " is that it?" so I had to explain that we weren't massively hungry due to the heat, plus due to my recent heart attack, I'm eating less when eating out, so was only going to try a couple of the ribs.
We knew the chicken main came with a sauce, but we also decided ordered their Peperoncini sauce as an extra as we wanted to try it. When this was asked for, the server came across a little rude again when he said "why are you ordering that for?" I said I know the chicken main came with sauce, but we wanted to try this other one too.
Food didn't take too long to come out, it was very hot and tasty. The chicken had a nice chargrilled taste and nice chunky frozen chips. Ribs very tender, but bbq sauce a little too sweet for me (just my personal taste that's all) Peperoncini sauce very nice with a chilli kick.
Overall, service was disappointing, food order has mentioned above, plus during our meal, we wasn't asked if our food was ok and not asked if we wanted any more drinks. So we had to chase for another drink and at the end of the meal we had to chase for the bill and then also the card machine to pay.
We would return to this restaurant again as we really enjoyed the food. Hopefully the service is better next time, especially without the little rude comments on what...
Read moreMany reviews praise the size of the portions, which are indeed more than ample. However, it would perhaps be better to focus on quality rather than quantity. Having just returned from a 14 day visit to Tuscany, we decided to book a table at Tarantino as we are fond of Italian cuisine. My starter of mussels in white wine and cream would have benefitted by at least some seasoning. I have never had to season a seafood dish in my life until now! Basic cooking skills missing here. My wife's mussels in tomato sauce were marginally better, but still lacked seasoning. The topping on my Romana pizza was very nice, but it was spoiled by the mass-produced bought in pizza base. This was in no way authentic. The texture was the same as a supermarket base. It should be no problem for a restaurant that advertises itself as "An Authentic Taste of Italy" and has a picture of a chef tossing a pizza to make their own bases. If indeed they do, then they need to revise their recipe. My wife had the Risotto Primavera, which was again under seasoned, but otherwise quite nice. The house wine was good. Even had the meal been perfect, it would have been spoiled by the very large, very noisy party that dominated the room. The waiting staff did their best and kept smiling. Would we return? Not in this lifetime, there are better Italian and other restaurants in and...
