We had high hopes for The Little Fish and Chip Shop but were, unfortunately, a little disappointed, the food was pretty unremarkable, especially for the price; nearly £6 for cod/haddock alone, pre-chips and extras. I understand they have added expenses of dining area and prime real-estate but once you add chips, sauce, soft drinks, you stop being in the 'cheap eats' category and for the quality and service - this doesn't stack-up. You seemingly pay for the decor, whether you eat-in or take-out.
My biggest complaint, however, is the use of disposable packaging for eat-in diners (we weren't asked) and POLYSTYRENE containers for sauces.... Seriously guys, this is unacceptable in a developed nation and an age of climate change awareness. There are loads of environmentally friendly or recyclable alternatives. You're right by the ocean, you must see first-hand the rubbish that washes in and the effects of global warming. Even tomato sauce is served in disposable plastic containers, courtesy of Heinz... I don't object to paying extra for ketchup but you can easily shift to self-serve from a glass bottle.
Maybe we were an exception but pleeeeease ask your customers if they are dining-in and ditch the polystyrene!
We had hoped for more from this quirky looking venue, I would have four starred for the food but the packaging situation deserves...
Read moreWas on the look out for a fish and chip supper while away for the weekend and came across this absolute gem. Greeted by a very friendly chap at the counter who greeted me as ‘young man’, apart from that he seemed quiet normal. Anyway, on to the actual food. We both ordered cod and chips and my partner ordered a cup of curry sauce. We chose to eat in, which amazingly they didn’t charge extra for. The food took about 10-15 minutes to be ready and it was well worth the wait. The chips where very nice indeed, not too small but also not too big, lovely texture. The cod was just the right size, not massive (sometimes places just try too hard and the fish is to big to complete) neither was it too small. The batter was about right, not to thick, it can sometimes be a bit filling otherwise. The fish encased inside was delicious, lovely and white, really fresh tasting. Moving on to the curry sauce, at times this can taste rather bland and almost artificial but the curry sauce served he tasted, well, for want of a better word, authentic. The service was great, very friendly and welcoming, the seating area was fine, not huge but as the shop is not too large it serves its...
Read moreOK. Overhyped. Queue horrendous but well managed. It took 1 hour and 24 minutes from joining the queue to receiving food last night (Saturday). The regulars were trotting off for takeout beer and wine from the nearby pub - the queue was an outing for them, a veritable night on the tiles Southwold style... Looking at the number of 5 star reviews here I'd hazard a guess that giving that rating justifies the time spent queuing, validation of investment in time rather than good food. 5 stars mean it's definitely worth it! Or is it really? I don't think so. The fish was good, hot, crispy batter etc. The chips less so - a variety of sizes meant some cooked to a crisp, others were undercooked - all a little greasy an cooking in beef dripping meant it set as the chips rapidly cooled leaving the palate coated in grease. Not really pleasant.
In short, I think this one is quirky and worth a shot in quiet periods but not worth the queue in busy times. The fish and chips are good but not fantastic, which they should be for a near 90 minute wait - there's much better around the country but I'm not sure of what else is available locally being an infrequent visitor to this part...
