We love the two Magpies and have been supporters since the very early days; we watched and questioned through the open viewing window as miricles happened before our eyes in the very cramped conditions that the bakery offered. We love pretty much all the products (they are definitely fresher from Tuesday onwards) and the coffee is always lovely. In her excellent book Rebecca mentions the 'familiar faces, sitting down for baked eggs and French toast' - here in lies my issue. This has not been possible in Southwold for some time as, with the exception of pizza on a Saturday (dare I say the Black Dog offering in the Nelson is a bit better), cafe menu items are no longer available. It appears that many (all?) of the other Two Magpies' establishemnts offer excellent food menus. Somehow the once proud flagship appears to have been neglected as the other, newer, shinier, shops bask in all the glory. Please don't forget your roots - surely some form of breakfast/lunch menu must be possible even if its just a bacon or sausage sourdough sandwich? Cyril was down on the prom early yesterday partaking of a coffee at Suzy's (very good bacon & egg sandwiches) whilst completing his crossword. - Happy days as always...
Read moreVery nice bakery! There was a small queue outside and I had to wait a couple of minutes when I got there at 10am, so consider going earlier if you want a bit more peace & quiet.
Food: The pecan tart was wonderful as an accompaniment to coffee (5/5 stars), and the carrot & pecan cake made a great dessert (also 5/5, very heavily iced, don't underestimate it!). The croissant I had was impressively sized and nicely buttery, but by the time I got to eating it (half 10) it wasn't quite as fresh and crisp as I would like - go early for the best pastries! (in this case 4/5, but had I gone earlier I'm confident it would be a 5)
Price: For a croissant, mini pecan tart and slice of cake I paid just over £11, which I would happily pay again for a treat when I'm next on holiday in Southwold, but it's a bit much if you want bread or pastries for breakfast every day!
All that said, the overall experience was excellent and I would definitely recommend treating yourself to some of...
Read moreFinally decided to go out now lockdown has been lifted and took a trip to southwold's Two Magpies. I've been apprehensive over leaving and being out and about but thought this was a quiet and simple way to ease into normality. Disgusted in the treatment from the staff. It was midday, and the staff were acting half asleep and rude/blunt. They were talking to eachother whilst meant to be serving me. They worked as slowly as possible, plodding and sighing as if annoyed I was ordering from them-making them work. I asked for a machiatto and they gave me an espresso- I was so stressed and upset by the way they treated me I didnt correct my order and left with an over priced coffee that was awful. Went to eat the cheese twist and was burnt and flaky.. can't believe how horrible this experience was. Normally they are okay, never the best experience from them but this time I really felt like I needed to complain. Left feeling really...
