I've had favourite cafes which are a home-away-from-home in the 4 countries and 20 places I've lived for some length of time. 108 is one of my two most favourite. For a moment, I even hesitated if I can move out of Truro because "what will I do without making a stopover at 108 every morning?!" (I did move and I survived :).
The coffee of 108 was first recommended to me by a lady who was working in the big coffee exhibitions business of London. Like her, I too thought it was the most consistently good coffee in Truro. I will also be eternally grateful that 108 worked unfailingly through lockdown and is open much earlier than most independent cafes in Truro.
The owners and staff there have always felt to me like hosts welcoming you warmly to their house or garden rather than as 'normal' owners and staff. What I've appreciated the most was that it's always felt not the polished professional approach of "how to create the best customer experience and engage the customer in the most effective way" (even if it's consistent with it!) but the welcome of warm, genuine, authentic people. If I wasn't passing through 108, I I would never have laughed that much on so many early mornings.
I've rarely eaten there, but this was the place where I first tried banana bread in my life (not being British born) and couldn't believe I've missed so much in life!
Full-heartedly...
Read moreI really didn’t want to write a negative review, as I love supporting independent businesses. It was my idea to try 108 Coffee House with my friends, as I thought it looked nice online.
Im not sure if we just got a bad day, as other reviews seem good! Upon arrival it took ages to order a coffee and when I did it then took a further 15 minutes to get it (even though the lady was just stood behind the machine as it wasn’t busy) I ordered mine with Soya milk but it came with regular dairy milk. Luckily I’m not vegan or have an allergy, or it could’ve been a disaster.
The food took forever, 40 minutes in total for 2 yogurt bowls and 2 avocado and egg toasts! When it came it was pleasant, I would’ve been happy with it if it had came quicker.
Pricing wise it is expensive for what you get! My avocado toast with eggs and mushrooms cost £11. The extra mushrooms were definitely not worth £2.50 I only got 3.
The man who took our orders was lovely though, and the lady who even though messed up my order was nice.
Unfortunately I can’t see myself coming back again, maybe for a takeaway coffee as the coffee was...
Read more[EDIT: Definitely not a fake review- bizarre owner response. I've lived and worked in Truro for 10 years. Will not be visiting this place again.] I don’t tend to write reviews, however I feel compelled to upon the basis of my experience across multiple visits to 108. Service is a mixed bag here. Some guests are spoken to fondly and at length, whilst others are treated at times with contempt. This place is for a certain type of customer - but even then, only at certain times. It is not reliable for he who wishes to conduct business or read over work at the weekend, as once made clear to a gentleman next to me who was asked to leave. I have been charged five different prices for the same drink across the space of a year with no rhyme or reason as to when which price is administered. In all honesty, the place has come to feel rather cold and the look some customers receive (especially those who do not order food) could be described similarly. Used to be great many years ago. Now? I...
