Two weeks after our visit (ironically whilst I was writing a 5* review) we checked our bank account and realised that we had been charged twice for our meal. We first contacted the restaurant by phone and were told a manager would contact us the following day by 8pm. This never happened so we called at 8.15pm and were told this was never logged with a manager but someone would call the following day, which they did and asked for proof via email. We sent this the same day, and had to chase this 3 days later as we had received no response. We finally had a reply and confirmation that the refund had been processed, a week after initially calling. This was a very disappointing end to our experience and not how we expected our issue to be managed (or not, in this case). However, below is my original review which shows that we were impressed with our visit on the actual day, but I’ve taken a star off due to our experience post-visit.

We had a great meal to celebrate our Nan’s 90th birthday at Fish at 55, we were very well looked after from the moment we arrived and birthday girl was given a complimentary glass of bubbly and a candle in her pudding! Throughout our visit staff were attentive and friendly. All the food was fantastic. The prawn cocktail to start was lovely with a very generous serving of Marie Rose sauce. I then had the fish from the specials board which was again cooked and presented very well. To finish off I had the banoffee pie which is my favourite so ended the meal the very best way! The only thing I would say is that it was quite difficult for Nan to get to the toilet on the first floor as both sets of stairs are quite steep / spiral, so I’m not sure how accessible it would be for people with mobility difficulties. Other than this, I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a...

Overall pretty disappointing meal.

We ordered from the sushi for lunch - but having taken order they returned to say that sushi would not now be available for an hour or so. Having chosen to dine here on the basis of the menu that was a bit of a bummer.

Replacement dish of mussels arrives - but so full of sand that my wife had to reject and after that had lost her appetite to explore the menu further.

PS the menu could have done with a wipe too - sticky with fingerprints and wine residue.

I had a skate wing. It was OK - not especially flavoursome. A bit light on the butter sauce and the full can of capers tipped on top that was kinda overkill and crowded. It certainly didn't add any to the presentation or experience.

The 'herbed mash' was, I suppose, just about legal under the trade descriptions act. But Gordon Ramsay would have sent it back. It had the 'school dinners' vibe. Yeah, there was a sprinkle of parsley on top, and parsley is a herb, having taken one mouthful from this sad scoop (£5 plus the obligatory 12.5% service) I left it untouched. Canteen fare.

The sand-filled mussels were not charged, but we noted how nobody ever asked if we'd enjoyed the meal. I think they anticipated. We could see and hear the staff discussing the mussels with the manager / owner - but he did not bother to come over and engage with the customer. Nor was there any query or thanks after we paid and left.

So all in all, pretty disappointing, both on a food front, and on a customer...

An updated review following another wonderful experience. July 2025: Yet another fantastic meal - this is definitely the home for our anniversary every year! Best lobster ever, and the hake with mash was amazing too, as always. We did also visit in April, and the boullibaise was also very delicious!

July 2024: Absolutely fantastic meal out for our 8th wedding anniversary this evening at @fishat55 restaurant - Adam looked us after us incredibly well this evening. We always have olives to begin, as they are the largest and juiciest around, with such a delicious marinade. From the specials board, we had squid with sweet chilli jam, which is unusual for to have a starter, so we shared this ahead of our main. The, most, humongous lobsters either of us have ever seen. Beautifully cooked, sweet and tender; I could get so used to eating this regularly!!! Only myself for dessert, despite 2 pornstar martinis throughout the meal my wife had a bottle of wine), and I was torn between passionfruit cheesecake and lemon meringue pie. As a compromise and after some fantastic advice from our Adam, I went for the cheesecake, with lemon sorbet, and had a lovely warmed amaretto on the side. Lush. 😉

July 2023: Fantastic experience for our wedding anniversary at this restaurant. The whole tailed lobster with garlic butter was amazing, and certainly the best I've...
