Stayed in the Maharaja Suite for 2 nights. Positives; Room was very big lovely and clean. Bed was very comfortable and bathroom was very stylish. Breakfast in the cafe downstairs is amazing(but you have to pay extra not included) Downsides; Windows were filthy and dried bid poo was a let down to the amazing view So much space, could really do with a sofa to sit on. The suitcase stand was used to put the fridge on. Lighting in the room bizarre, no bedside light or switch within reach of the bed. A trip to the loo in the night meant waking the other half as it turned on 2 lights either side of the bed. Lighting in the bathroom was very dim, even when the bulb was changed for a new one. Not practical light fixtures. Bright green fire exit light was distracting at night. The hotel operates using smart locks, there was no internal secondary chain lock or swing bar lock. I really didnât feel safe staying in a room with this type of lock. It is very easy to leave the room unlocked if you forget to swing the handle upwards. Noise from street awful, only single glazed, perhaps cannot double glaze due to restrictions, but internal secondary window would really help. Bought earplugs for the second night, but it didnât help much.
I really would like to give a higher rating but the most important thing when staying away at a hotel is getting a good nights sleep and feeling safe, sadly I didnât feel either of the two. At ÂŁ145 a night I really did...
Read moreJust got back from a lovely stay in the Scoresby Polar Bear room. All the rooms are named after local stories and legends which we really liked and enjoyed finding out more about! The location was perfect. Within walking distance of everything we hoped to see in Whitby. Check in was 3.00pm so we parked at the leisure centre (pay and display) car park and had a wonder round beautiful Whitby until we could check in. The parking voucher was left in our room so we collected that then made our way back to the car (just a short walk- less than 10 mins). Itâs a busy season so we did expect it to be hard to find a parking space in the designated zone but after a little drive round we found parking in the correct zone near the sea front. It was just 5 minutes walk to the accommodation from here. We had a drink and ate at the cafe attached to the b n b a couple of times during our stay and it was lovely food with great service. Would definitely recommend. The room itself was decorated beautifully, comfortable and spacious with views onto the street below. We loved the bay window with seating. There were ear plugs provided as there isnât much in the way of sound proofing and all the noise from the street below (and the seagulls) can be heard easily! This didnât bother us but itâs worth noting if youâre a light sleeper. All in all we really enjoyed our visit and would love to stay at the Jet Black...
Read moreLovely boutique 'remote' hotel. Highly recommended to stay somewhere a bit different and with proper Whitby personality. Note that no rooms have completely step-free access and there is no lift.
Check in is online, you will be sent an electronic access code in advance of your arrival, one for the street door and one for your room. There are no Reception staff on site but you will have contact details in case of problems. We received a text message on our first night checking that everything was okay.
The rooms all have individual decor related to Whitby folklore. We stayed in St Hilda's Abbey on the top floor (lots of stairs, summer steep, narrow and twisty!), with a green, black and copper theme and an artistic mural of the Abbey and 'casting out the snakes' legend of St Hilda on one wall. The were little details to spot everywhere. This room has a great view across the harbour to Whitby abbey.
It's an old building with single glazing; the street is quiet but the seagulls aren't! Bear that in mind if you're not used to them. There is no hotel car park but for £2 you can request a four-day parking permit for the surrounding streets. Breakfast isn't included but the café on the ground floor opens at 8.30. Highly recommend the Hand of Glory (another Whitby folklore theme) hash with Bloody Mary sauce -...
