Matalang was a lighthouse in the fog, shelter in a storm, water in a desert if you will. Durham seems to have lack of toilets and after needing a leak my friend and I hastily made our way to the bus station only to find our Hail Mary was locked behind a 20p paywall and a man kicking at the door to be let in next. After our hopes had been shattered, we departed swiftly in search of a new bog. After already searching for 30 minutes we decided to try a make your own hotpot restaurant, Matalang . Upon arrival we were greeted by an angel - gifting us the salvation we needed, not what we deserved. She welcomed us with open arms and an outstretched hand offering us her pristine condition porcelain throne - no paywall, no havoc, no problems. Swiftly after this offer, we jumped at this opportunity and did our business in the cleanest conditions possible. Before we left we made sure to have the place spotless, and spotless we did leave it. With heavy hearts we exited the haven created by these wonderful people and said our goodbyes, thanking them for the gracious help they gave us. 10/10...
Read moreWonderful experience eating here. I enjoy hot pot but it's hard to find people who want to share one. So this malatang style of food is ideal for me, where I can try a wide variety of things and modify the quantity to my liking. Additionally, the bases provided by the restaurant are so tasty, especially the dry malatang base. I really enjoyed my experiences visiting here and the friends I've brought with me also enjoyed their experiences here. The food is certainly affordable, especially with their lunch offer, and you can splurge if you feel like it. Finally, I find the staff to be very friendly and nice, contributing to a very comfortable dining experience. 10/10 would...
Read moreWe stopped in for lunch and got the Char-siu lunch special, it was really delicious and surprisingly cheap.
The general concept of the place is picking up a bowl and choosing all your own ingredients, you pay a flat price for the base plus extra for the ingredients you choose by weight. You take the chosen options to the counter and they prepare and cook your noodle dish.
The staff are incredibly friendly and polite and more than willing to help people be introduced to the concept.
They also have a big selection of toppings and condiments to add after it is ready which are all included in the price.
I highly recommend...
