Mary’s Pasties, Mevagissey – The Facebook Hype Train Derailed So this all started on Facebook. Some well-meaning soul swore blind that Mary’s Pasties were “life-changing” and that I had to try them. Naturally, I listened, ditched my usual Philps fix, and drove 40 minutes out of my way in search of this pastry promised land. Fast forward to Sunday lunch: two pasties in the oven, warming through, my mouth already rehearsing the victory dance. And then… disappointment. Not terrible, not inedible, but come on where’s the meat? Where’s the pepper? Where’s the flavour that makes you weep with joy and whisper “this is Cornwall” under your breath? The pastry was solid flaky, golden, promising so much but the filling? Sparse. Bland. The kind of thing that makes you stare into the distance and rethink your life choices. Overall verdict: 5/10. Edible, but not worth the pilgrimage. Next time, I’m sticking with Philps. Sorry Mary, you’re nice… but not Facebook hype nice. #MarysPasties #PastyPilgrimage #CornishFoodie #PastieDisappointment #AllPastryNoParty #WhereIsTheMeat #PepperPlease #PastieQuestGoneWrong #CornishClassicOrNot #PhilpsWins #SundayLunchFail #FacebookMadeMeDoIt #OverhypedEats #PastyRegret #CornwallFoodTour #FlakyButEmpty

Admittedly I've not had a great many cornish pasties. And I'm not quite massive fan of pastry in general. But after my wife dragged me through many a shop in the village whilst holding a bag with two massive pasties, I was salivating. The smell just made me want to sit down and eat them there and then. But no..... I had to be patient. And boy was my patience rewarded! This is without a doubt the best pastie I've ever eaten. And not just cornish ones. I highly recommend this place to anyone with even a passing interest tasty hearty food. 10/10 would eat the whole shop if I could.

Best place in Mevagissey to get a pasty - you get plenty of filling within the pasty itself, and it’s such good quality. I have coeliac disease, so was great to find a place that also cook gluten free pasties. You have to give them at least 90 minutes notice, but we ordered them the previous day and gave a time to pick them up and they had come fresh out the oven for the time we picked. Definitely the best gluten free pasty I’ve ever had. They did also have gluten free scones, but unfortunately they had none the day we visited.

Wow, what a difference a week makes. We are locals and went in last week to sit down and have a pastie and coffee. We had a lovely warm welcome, all the staff were very polite and the lady in the background chatted to us whilst she was preparing stew for Wednesday last week. For this visit I would happily give 5 stars. Today however was a totally different story. We went in and asked for pasties and coffee. We were told we couldn't sit in as the restaurant was closed! The member of staff said it was usually open till 5, but something had come up and they needed to close. So we were told we could only have takeaway. So the lady in question immediately put our pasties in paper bag telling the gentleman on the till to charge for the pasties, we then asked if we could have the coffee as well, and she said no the restaurant was closed, however the other members of staff said they could still make us coffees as the machine was still on. Whilst waiting for the coffees the older woman who bagged the pasties, came from round the counter moaning to the other members of staff about running out of something as her stupid manager hadn't ordered more! Not a very professional thing to be doing with customers in the shop. We took our purchases and went and sat outside on a bench to eat. We must have been there half hour and in all that time the shop was not closed up, the door was open and infact a lady went in just as we got in our car to buy something, so I don't see why we could not have sat inside. We were hoping to come in several times a week. One day for pasties and then on a Wednesday for the weekly roast, but after today we have changed our minds and will now...

Unhelpful staff is letting this place down , we sat and lady next to us asked for sugar , this young girl (she was the only girl there) ignored her for good 15 minutes , then lady got up Herslef and asked for sugar , this girl gave her 12 bags of sugar , she took and left 10 in a basket on the counter top (I counted them in the basket when I went to use loo) what a wastage ?????

we asked for tea and she made tea for seating people in takeaway up (which is not an issue) she put milk in it and I am not allowed to drink milk , when I asked her , she said did you ask without milk , I said no , but all people bring milk and sugar separate , she took 15 minutes atleast to make drink for other people and ignored me, then left barista counter , because she do not want to make tea for me, a young lad arrived and it took him literally less than half a minute to make a tea.

We have a business in Cornwall as well and in a akulae type of village , we wait for season all year around , this girl is not suitable for this business.

Their pasties are good , but would never go to this place again and I cannot believe how many negative reviews are about some staff members here , and who ever own this place is not...
