This is one of the loveliest places in Berwick. It is a community restaurant run by Millie, her husband and a band of volunteers . Millie is a keen advocate of the Zero Waste initiative and Slow Food Movement. She can only decide what to cook on a day by day basis because it depends on what she receives from supermarket and individual donations. This makes for a lot of invention and mystery. Out of near out of date food she and her team cook up all sorts of creative combinations. Mains like green thai curry or beef curry sit alongside stir-frys and wraps. Sometimes a pilaff, pie or a risotto pop up. There are also daily home made soups. Everything is cooked from scratch. In addition, there are home made cakes and various drinks , coffees and a delicious turmeric coffee. The food is excellent but it is also the strongest illustration of community care for local people. Aside from Sunday, the main board is not priced. Instead she asks for contributions on a pay as you go forward model (or what you can afford ) If more people and towns set up initiatives like this the country would be a far happier and...
Read moreNorthern Soul is a gem of a place! The café intercepts food from local supermarkets, that would have otherwise been binned, and turns them into delicious meals. This means that the menu is constantly changing. From sandwiches and pies to soups, curries and stir fries. They’re pretty good at providing vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and dairy free. I love their ethos of ‘feeding bellies and not bins’.
There are set prices for teas, coffees, home-made spritzers and cakes. However for the meals they have a ‘Pay as you Feel’ during the week. Sundays is posh brunch time, where there is a set price, but for the quality of the locally sourced and organic ingredients it’s a good plate of items.
I’ve visited quite often and it’s always fun to see what’s on the menu and the food has never disappointed. Book ahead if you want Sunday posh brunch.
You realise pretty soon, that the place is more like a community hub than a café and the atmosphere in there is always warm and friendly. It’s such a wonderful place, and thoroughly deserves all the love and...
Read moreHolding a birthday party outside for 30 people is always a risky business, even in June. Factor in a catering brief that's a bit vague on inside or outside service and how big the 'nibbles' should be, and you're presenting your caterer with quite a challenge. Millie and the team from Northern Soul Kitchen rose to that challenge brilliantly. My lovely guests feasted on a wide range of upcycled food (which would otherwise have gone to landfill) transformed into sumptuous dishes from burgers to watt (Ethiopian spicy lentils), from cheesy beetroot crostini to vegan lamb koftas and from individual banoffee pies to the lightest, fluffiest vegan chocolate cakes. This was tailored, great value, personalised catering. And my kitchen was immaculate when the party was done. Great...
