When is a cafe not a cafe? When it's Oxfords and also a bakery. We don't go to Dorchester too often but when we do we'll head here to wind down and fill up. A warm welcome, friendly and efficient service, banging coffee and a selection of baked goods and salads to keep you going back. As you leave, I suggest buying a baked good or a loaf - they really are very good. It reminded me a little of Salt Pig in Wareham (also available in Chesil); the option of blending a rich calorific treat with a couple of beautifully prepared and tasty salads at a reasonable price. (Take the comparison - Salt Pig is very good!). While we were there, a young, wheelchair-bound girl came in with her Dad, or guardian, and, shrouded in the mechanics of the wheelchair, not to mention all of the other undoubted difficulties heaped upon her, proceeded to give the rest of us a lecture on staying positive and happy. My hat is off to her.

Just great!! A warm welcome will greet you when you walk in. The staff are friendly and relaxed. They all work hard. Coffee is from a real coffee machine and is delicious. The cake selection is huge( see photos) and includes Biscoff(I was given a taster and it was lovely) and kit kat slices, eccles cakes, chelsea buns etc, with a lovely selection of savoury options including blue vinny, fig n onion sausage roll and mushroom, leek, chick pea and butter bean roll which were just delightful with a portion of winter salad. There is a huge selection of bread on offer too. The atmosphere is lovely. It reminded me of a bakery as I knew it when I was younger. There are a number of tables and chairs with external seating on the street if the weather allows. I normally gravitate to the well known high street coffee shops but this was far, far nicer and supports local business. I shall be back. Spot on!

Favourite bakery and coffee shop in Dorchester. Cakes, sausage rolls, bread and coffee always lovely. Their blue vinnie sausage rolls are delicious. They make an amazing almond chocolate croissant. The staff are friendly and dogs are welcome.

Not one to leave a review over something so small but never experienced such a pathetic display of business practice. A scoop of salad with quiche was £1.90. Thought it was expensive but fine. Manager proceeds to loudly complain to the server, asking if she's used a bigger ladel which she denies and I can see is true because it's the one in the bowl. Manager heats quiche and I'm given half the salad i was already served and paid! Understand if she thought it was too much but it was served and paid for by this point, correct your portion size the next time. How she wasn't ashamed of her behaviour, I don't know. Her server certainly seemed to be when I queried why half was missing and just the liquid from the salad running on the plate. Didn't pay that much to be served a few bits of cucumber and tomato. Lady, get some training in, you clearly are in dire need of it to run a business. And if you need to correct your staff, do it in private, don't talk loudly in front of the customer. I wish I'd thought to take a picture of the sad...

HERO TO ZERO

I have been coming to oxfords for years. The bread and baked goods are great and previously my children have always been so well catered for. We have been so many times in the past. Usually they have a plain cheese sandwich that the kitchen makes as none of the sandwiches behind the glass are ever suitable for my small ones. However my last two visits were completely disappointing and my children couldn’t eat anything. The kitchen refused to make them, they said they could only slice so many loaves of bread a day - so I offered to buy a loaf so they could use the bread and that was shortly followed by another excuse. They weren’t busy on both occasions and the staff working were rather unfriendly. I told the staff on the day how disappointing my last two visits have been- they didn’t seem that bothered.

IF YOU HAVE UNDER 5s AND ARE LOOKING FOR A SANDWICH LUNCH,...
