Ive never been here before so I wasn't sure what to expect. As soon as i arrived in the car park it was Pay and Display. I only had £20 on me so I couldn't pay in coins. I walked into the bar and asked the lady behind the bar politely if she could change it and she said she was struggling with change and couldn't do it. She then replied with don't pay for parking, the Manager said don't worry about it. I asked if the Manager owned the car park and could guarantee I wouldn't get a ticket? She said no, it's privately owned. The Manager isn't in charge of parking so I don't think I'll take his word and end up with a fine. Long story short I purchased some drinks to get the change, then i had to go back outside to get my ticket.
Food Don't get me started on the food. 3 of us ordered at the same time at 7:40pm (cut of point). I ordered the British beef and ale pie and it didn't come with seasoned vegetables as stated (just peas) but that wasn't a huge issue for me as it was quite nice. My partner however ordered pork belly and asked for no mash but extra veg they said they couldnt do that. Seriously? She then instead ordered a steak but they refused to change it after 40 seconds of ordering it at the bar as she changed her mind and wanted a mixed grill. My friend also ordered the mixed grill. The bar lady brought the the cuttelery but failed to bring steak knives. The pie with (smash) and pork belly came out together and so we waited 5 mins for the mixed grill to come out... No one came over to ask how our food was. In the end we had to go up and ask for the steak knives as the steak was very CHEWY - to the point we left half of it. As the mixed grill was no where in sight after 10 mins of waiting and no staff member in sight to enquire about this missing meal, we had no choice but to eat as both meals were getting cold.
After 30 mins of waiting and 5 other people having food served to them, me and my partner finished our meals and we was still sat waiting. It finally arrived and i asked the bar lady if it was ok to give who ever it is to blame for the lateness some constructive feedback. I said when you go somewhere to eat and drink, you expect the food to come out at the same time and we expect to eat together as a group. Now we have to watch our friend eat his mixed grill for the next 30 mins. Its just really unprofessional. The excuse we received was, well we've had a big group of people order food so we've had to get out as much food as we can to whatever table we can the quickest... what utter rubbish! Get better trained staff in the kitchen that can cope with 'quiet' times and don't serve food if you can't bring it out all together. It's just plain rude, embarrassing and unprofessional. I've never heard or seen anything like it and therefore won't be returning again that's for sure.
Oh and they don't serve any non alchohlic drinks or...
Read moreNow called The Old Zoological. Used to be a brilliant place to drink. Only called in for one drink with my wife before our taxi home after celebrating our son's 21st. The atmosphere was poor. This place has obviously become a regular's only establishment. Which is probably why, after about 10 minutes, a young man with a chavy hooligan demeanour was heading towards me accusing me of staring at him and shouting, "Are you alright mate". My wife and I were quick to point out that the idiot was standing in front of a large screen showing boxing, and that is what I was staring at, and I didn't even realise he existed until he started acting the big man. He then carried on talking rubbish before going back to his drink. Amazingly, the security for the pub did nothing, looked like he was pals with the guy, probably why someone who wasn't at all intimidating thinks he can abuse visiting patrons of The Old Zoological and not end up in hospital at some point, when he picks on the wrong person. In short, average drinks, at town centre prices, shabby decor with ripped seats, etc., poor atmosphere and our whole night ruined by the existing clientele. Only gave one star because the lady who served us was a decent barmaid, and you can't give a no star review.
Won't be using The Old...

‼️Only thing I'd say (not the pubs fault) is there's an older gentleman, all white hair, a local to Hull and regular to here - comes across quite eccentric- bad teeth and all white hair probably on his 60s - ‼️warning‼️ if you're not white, and especially if you're a girl it seems, this geezer will stare at you and after a few pints may very well ask you what you're doing in his pub and his country - the signature move is singing songs AT you, very intimidating and racist. Also gave an unassuming Romanian lad a hard time. So just speak to staff/make sure you're not vulnerable as this chap is quite unhinged. Drinking a beer usually on his own, singing out of context and unpleasant googly eyes that he'll use to make you feel uncomfortable - very opinionated, hasn't seen the sun or had a hug for a wee while I reckon. Flat cap, looks like he'd make your into a lovely lamp if he could 🫠
