Having read some of the very mixed reviews left by other travellers we ventured here with open minds and limited alternatives, but at £120 a night expected rather more than we found. The Queen Mary is a rather scruffy roadside pub where we received a very lukewarm welcome in a bar hosting a selection of locals effing and blinding at a football match on tv. Following a request for full payment, we were escorted over the undulating carpet and taken to our "King" room. This very small room is cluttered with a double bed, a variety of pine furnitue and an entirely unecessary sofa. The room overlooks the main road and is feet from a busy junction, from which freight lorries pull away at night making uninterrupted sleep impossible. Some ineffectual pvc secondary glazing is the "soundproofing". We were reminded to check out before 10.30 and no we couldn't leave the car in the car park after that time as they were very busy. Breakfast is not included in the £120 and if required needs to be booked the night before! Following a change to ferry timings we had enquired in advance whether we might book a late checkout but that wasn't possible either, but had hoped that we might not have to move our car (and luggage) from the car park. Checkout was similarly curt. As it happens, we drove past a couple of times later that day, noting the car park contained only the same couple of cars and the derelict ambulance that graced it at the start of our stay. I've no doubt that this review will attract the same sort of vitriolic defensive response that other critiscisms have provoked but other travellers need to be aware of...

Read moreI am sad I have to have to write this, but I had an absolutely terrible experience and would actively tell people never to come to this place. I came here on Sunday to watch Aston Villa vs Man City in the carabao cup final, and was absolutely astonished. First of all the place is run down, and second of all both of the bar staff attitude was beyond shocking, in particular the lady behind the bar. I was on my, topping up some credit on to my contactless (which I was going to order a full meal) before the landlady rudely and aggressively asked me to leave as I had not yet ordered a drink. I don't know any bar or venue that within 10 minutes of you arriving would ask you to get out. I tried to explain what I was doing but they both particularly the man we're just plain rude. as I alluded to earlier I will recommend to people not...
