An absolute Gem! What a find.
Coming from 12 years of hospitality, it's not often I am wowed by any pub, restaurant or hotel. However, I get real pleasure from finding places that, without obvious effort, naturally get it just right; The warm welcome myself and 2 freinds received here from an obviously kind-natured waitress set the tone for the rest of the evening.
We had already come from the Bierkeller and had a rather bad experience so were releived that the staff in this random restaurant we had chosen were so freindly. We were offered a table, without prior reservation - which had very professionally been her first question, and given menus along with the option to order drinks, which were promptly brought over. The waitress then came back with some olives and some lovely garlic bread and butter - Delicious! After looking at the menu, a waiter introduced himself and gave a full explanation as to how the specials, sides and deals worked. We ordered with ease and were surprised when the waitress shortly returned with our starters, one of which she set on fire 🔥!! (See picture - very fun!). We enjoyed our starters and mains in a lovely atmosphere where we could chat comfortably, and left completely happy.
I am so impressed with just how well the team did at getting the basics right - something that even the big players still haven't mastered.
No venue has to go over the top when it comes to providing an excellent experience; just doing the simple things well and getting the basics right can be the difference between lasting memories or a foul aftertaste.
Well done Skewer House and thank you to the team that looked after us so well! I'll certainly recommend you and wish to return with our wives for a...
Read moreNot great at all, the food looks impressive but is very bland. It’s just skewered meat - no seasoning or decent sauces offered. Seems like a novelty restaurant- they light up chorizo at the table but the table next to us set on fire so a bit risky.
There was no tea or coffee (apparently they had no way of heating water, very odd for a restaurant which probably has a kettle and stove - I assume they just couldn’t be bothered).
The restaurant was packed, the seats were very small and close together - not comfortable to eat in at all. The worst part was that they had overbooked, so they asked us to leave our table when we hadn’t actually finished. There was no indication that we only had the table for 90 minutes when we booked so it left us rather sour. We where a table of six who had spent a lot so I found this to be very poor from the management and it ruined our meal. I like to enjoy a meal and the company I am with so being rushed out of a restaurant is a big no for me. The staff were quite rude about the timings as well, I expressed I wasn’t pleased about being moved to stand in the bar and finish my after dinner drinks but the manager argued with me telling me it is standard in any restaurant to only have a table for 2 hours. Having worked and eaten in many restaurants I am well aware that this is not the case at all. Either way, a simple apology would have worked much better than being defensive and rude to customers who had spent a decent amount of money by this point.
Definitely won’t be going back or recommending it. Plenty of better choices in Taunton if you like a meal full of flavour and good...
