I have been to Stop the World Cafe on a number of occasions previously with family members and have only eaten savouries which have been extremely good. However on a more recent visit, we chose cakes - the two who chose carrot cake were pleased with their choice, but my Victoria sponge left a great deal to be desired. the sponge was very dense - more akin to a microwave steam pudding- and the butter-cream filling was absolutely dreadful. It was like biting into solid butter, Very greasy and without flavour. The butter/icing sugar ratio was clearly all wrong. On commenting upon this to my daughter, one of the staff partially overhead my comments and very rudely said 'it's not cream it's butter-cream'. I acknowledged that I was aware of what it was supposed to be but that it was not good, She then just flounced off without asking if I would like anything else. I could only eat a few mouthfuls and had to leave the rest. The staff member was clearly put out by the criticism as when I came to pay at the counter, she chose to ignore me for as long as she could and was rude when eventually taking my money. Such a shame - we were really looking forward to the visit and it didn't meet our expectations on this occasion. I expect that we will return but I hope for...

It is always good to frequent local independent businesses like this. They are a part of the community as much as you are. It's a place to say a friendly hello, exchange some news and just have a chat. So much more needed in these more socially isolated days thanks to the global pandemic. This is the new normal now, so while you can order stuff online, don't forget to keep your local businesses alive. You'd really miss them when they're gone. Not just for the convenience, but for the quality and as I mentioned social aspect.
I've chatted to some of the staff here comparing tattoos and driving lessons and all sorts of random stuff!
I'd say it would be difficult to get to the loo on the ground floor if you were in a wheelchair, but it is big enough in itself.
The internet means you can get almost anything online, but you can't do the people watching or browse the counter and try something new. Let's hope these businesses survive. It is us to us...
Read moreStopped in here with some visiting family members for a light lunch. Out of all the Broadway eateries, this is one that Iâd never tried before. No pre-booking available so itâs first come first serve, fortunately we didnât have to wait long for a table. The dining area is beautifully decorated, light and airy and there is also the optional outdoor seating, weather permitting. Service was efficient and attentive and the food was very good. There is a varied menu and also a daily Specials board, I was a little disappointed that no salads are offered though. I opted for the Mackerel PĂątĂ© with cruditĂ©s and Melba toast, which was very good indeed. The pĂątĂ© was topped with smoked salmon and the portion was more than generous. My partner had the âBest Bubble in the Worldâ an ample portion of bubble and squeak, topped with two fried eggs. I am told it was a â10 out of 10.â There is also an extremely tempting dessert counter at the front of the restaurant, filled with some amazing looking cakes, which we shall most certainly be returning to sample at some...
