Overall a terrible experience at Storia. The food was satisfactory for the most part, however one dish was served cold.
Despite booking in advance as a table of 6, we were given a cramped 4 seater table which was clearly not big enough.
During our meal, the waitress clearing the table next to us dropped a plate which meant food ended up all over my clothing and hair. Of course, accidents happen, however this mistake was obviously caused by the waitress trying to balance more plates than she could handle.
This accident aside, the overall service was VERY poor. It took an hour for our starters to arrive. Simple requests were ignored, e.g, asking for 2 spoons with desert, only to be given one and then after trying to get the attention of a waitress for 10 minutes, having to resort to stealing a fork from a nearby empty table.
When serving our plates the waiter just placed the dishes wherever he felt like rather than asking which dish was for each person.
Anytime we needed to ask the waiting staff for anything, they were nowhere to be found.
Will not be returning to Storia and would actively advise others to steer clear. There are many great Italian restaurants in Maidenhead (such as Sauce and Flour), if you are looking for Italian food, please do check out one of the alternatives nearby.
Finally, it's worth noting that this poor service was on a Monday night, when the restaurant was not even half full. So the poor service cannot be explained by the staff being too busy.
Edit - in response to Storia's comments
Regarding the cramped table, we DID tell our waitress that the table was too small and even stated that there wasn't enough space for us to order any side dishes. She simply smiled at us...
In reference to your comments about receiving our mains in 50 minutes... this is absolutely untrue. Our starters may have taken 50 minutes but the mains were far longer than that. This suggests to me that either your ordering system is incorrect or the waitress did input our order straight after she took it.
Regarding your tip, you should feel very lucky that the bill payer was drunk by the point of paying. She was also the person who received cold food and didn't want to say anything, so I would say that her tip is not a reliable source in believing that you deserved it.
You only need to walk past your restaurant (as I do every night) to see that you are nowhere near as busy as most of the other Italian restaurants on the same road. I think this...
Read moreI recently visited Storia in Maidenhead and decided to try their Margherita Buffala. Given the reputation of Margherita as a staple of Italian cuisine, I was looking forward to a well-balanced, traditional take on this iconic pizza. Unfortunately, what arrived was far from a classic Margherita. The pizza was completely covered in rocket, which overwhelmed the flavours and resulted in an overpowering bitterness. A Margherita should showcase the simplicity and harmony of tomato, mozzarella, basil, and a well-crafted dough—here, the rocket dominated so much that it felt like an entirely different dish. Additionally, the base was excessively chewy, making it difficult to enjoy. A well-prepared pizza should have a balance of crispness and softness, but this felt dense and unrefined. If a restaurant wishes to stray so significantly from tradition, I believe it would be more appropriate to name the dish accordingly—perhaps Arugula Buffala rather than Margherita Buffala. That way, diners would have a clearer idea of what to expect. I sincerely hope the team reviews this recipe and considers making adjustments to better honour one of Italy’s most iconic pizzas. Done well, a true Margherita is a celebration of simplicity and quality ingredients, and it would be wonderful to see that...
