I’ve been to sumo before and had lunch to takeaway and it was okay. Figured I’d give them another try tonight with them now doing deliveries with lockdown 2. I ordered on FoodHub and was only eating for myself, the minimum order was 20 pounds which I thought was a bit much to start but I just ordered lots of extras to make it up to the required amount because I really wanted to give them another chance. Once I ordered it said the food was going to take around 35 minutes, after 35 minutes it’s 5.45 and I figured I’d wait a little longer because I assumed they must be busy with it being Saturday night, I waited till 6.15 before ringing as the app we ordered on said our food had been delivered. When we rang a young man answered the phone and immediately told us the order was on the way but then once we told him we ordered online he said he didn’t even have our order on his system, he then told us he was new and they were extremely busy then someone else got put on the phone and said they had our order. I understand that they were busy but asked them how much longer it would be as I had been waiting an hour and he said the delivery driver had just set off with 18 orders so if it was in the pile then probably in the next 20 minutes. I got my food 5 minutes later and most of it is cold, the only warm part was the rice, it also seems quite expensive for what we received. The beef ramen didn’t taste of much and the duck was more skin than meat. Credit where it’s due the Korean chicken starter was really nice, it’s just a shame it was cold. I’m sorry for writing this review especially when businesses are finding it tough right now but please rather fix your ordering systems or be a little more organised for busier times. I unfortunately won’t...
Read moreFood was nice and very hot. Chicken wings were tasty but a bit too chewy. Restaurant is small. The main issue we had was that we were not pre-warned that we had a limited time at the table. Once we had finished our meals, 4 of us, we were not asked if we wanted tea, coffee or desert. Then to our surprise the lady waitress/front of house, said "you have to go now, other people have arrived" and somewhat abruptly plonked the bill in front of my husband. Although we understand it is a small establishment and they want to cram in as many customers as possible, it felt very conveyerbelt! We should have been told at the start and she could have been more polite about it. It was, you've had your meal, now go! For this reason, I don't enjoy being rushed to eat and to leave and to not be told, or offered a tea or coffee or desert, so I am put off now. Then they ask for 10% service charge on top! My husband refused this, and gave 5%. However, in hindsight, we agreed we should not have given any tips due to the manner we were told to leave. I wonder very much if others have experienced this there? I have been to lots of restaurants, and am aware that you sometimes have a set time, which is fine and understandable, but this was always made very clear at the booking/beginning and done in a...
Read moreWhat a little gem. Excellent, authentic food. Great service. Very nice 'Streetfood Experience'. Staff very friendly, efficient and polite. Sitting at the Bar instead of at a table (perhaps not the seats adjacent to the till), for us added to the whole thing. No one in the open kitchen shows any concern about being watched by customers, such is their confidence in what they do. We think they adopt this attitude rightly so. Very good drink selection. It's not cheap (what restaurants & cafes are these days) but it is absolutely excellent value for money. The only comment we'd make so that others really do enjoy Sumo rather than have an expectation spoilt, service is fast. Even when it's busy, you will not wait long for food. This may be exactly what you want, but if you're thinking of wanting to linger over, and savour the food; you should order a little (or a course) at a time which slows things down some ... it's street food so 'fast' is what they're supposed to do ... they do it well without it affecting the quality of the food they serve. A brilliant place, one of the very best food experiences in Beverley and Hull. We highly recommend Sumo if you...
