The Crown — Restaurant in England

Wondering around we stumbled on The Crown up a side street and on the corner of residential square, it is reminiscent of small bars you would find in the outskirts of European towns. A nice selection of beers on tap from the brewer and owners Cornish Crown. For purely research purpose we tried the three cask beers and all were excellent, served at a good temperature and perfectly poured. The bar is small but not overly so, very clean and there were even fresh flowers on the tables. The outside seating is on the edge of the square and is a great sun trap. The young woman behind the bar was friendly and pleasant. Definitely worth seeking out if you are in Penzance, it is only a couple of minutes from the train/bus station. What a wonderful and unexpected find. I’ve enjoyed the Crown’s beers elsewhere in Cornwall but wasn’t actually looking for their pub when I stayed in Penzance recently. Despite these difficult times the pub still manages to feel like a pub as it is in a very traditional building but has the feel of a Micropub (trust me, that’s a compliment). Their daught and keg beers dominate the bar and I was very happy about that. Over two nights I tried them all and they were all In tip top condition and very agreeable. What makes a difference is the welcome chat in the pub that is just big enough to support social distancing but also small enough to feel cosy. This is a real ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ place. From the outside and inside it looks a bit grim, but the atmosphere and general vibe was quality! It is clearly a good old fashioned proper pub with seating outside at the front. The range of drinks is not extensive but is sufficient. I stuck with the Crown Porter… absolutely excellent 👍 It’s a shame there’s no CAMRA discount, but at less than a fiver a pint I’m not going to complain. Would definitely return if back...
