Read good things online, and saw plenty of local real ales available, so visited with my wife and 11 month old son for lunch.
Walked through past the bar and sat my son in a pub supplied baby seat/high chair, out of the way, around in the quiet rear seating area, so as not to disturb others.
Ordered a pint of Butscombe original ale, which tasted great. Unfortunately, half way through it, a member of the bar staff came and informed me that children were not allowed on the premises and we would have to leave. Read moreI visit this pub semi-regularly and it is obviously very well run. The cask Butcombe beer range is excellent, if slightly top-priced. The ales always appear to be well tended. Tonight the beer scored 5, the food scored 3. It took well over 1/2 an hour to arrive, probably 40 mins (OK, I know it's Saturday). Hunters Chicken was fine but not quite enough of the (not-proper-potato) chips. The Mac & Cheese? Well I thought I must have ordered the snack/starter version (which is £5 cheaper). Coupled with this small main meal were an acceptable bowl of fresh salad and one measly scrap of garlic bread. I spent about £47 in the G&T tonight but don't think I got best value. If you're only going to serve up Greene King quality pub food, at least make sure there's enough of it! To cap it all, the table clearer could only respond with"no worries!" when I tried to register my discontent. Reluctantly, disappointed overall by the way the food was provided, sadly, won't be going back there to...
