Top Quality Roast in friendly, amiable place, hitting that sweet spot between gastro pub and chilled local.
Booked a Sunday lunch here after hearing from a friend that this is her go too for Sunday lunch. Hanover isn't too short on either decent pubs or cracking Sunday roasts, so there is some stiff local competition. On booking, I asked if they could cater for a friend who was gluten free, soy free and vegan, and my child, who being on the spectrum with sensory processing challenges, was particularly important. The staff checked and were able to cater for all of us. Winner winner, Sunday dinner!
On sitting down the pub wasn't too busy but did fill up. Inside is cosy without feeling cluttered. Little Sims playing in the background helped for a chilled out Sunday vibe. Perfect!
The vegan Wellington was just super. Three massive roast potatoes, savoy cabbage, braised red cabbage, beetroot, carrots, roast parsnips and parsnip crisps, with 2 generous slices of Wellington in a flakey pastry. The gravy was served on the side, which I really liked, as it meant I could attempt to tempt my kid into trying an actual vegetable. And also because I'm a fussy bint with gravy placement! The entire portion was enough to place me in a very happy food coma.
Really helpful with regards to my kids limited pallet, and as other autistic folk will attest, this is so important when enjoying a meal out. So appreciated the flexibility. We ordered some roast chicken and pale Yorkshires for her beige food requirements.
The rest of the menu, dotted around the pub on chalk boards, looks equally good. This is definitely going to be my go to for a decent Sunday roast, and I so want to try the other offerings. We all said, we've not had a roast this good for a very, very long time. Thank...
Read moreDespite numbers dwindling over the past few years, Hanover still has a healthy number of pubs. The Greys used to be a music venue that punched above its weight in terms of people who played there but a number of changes of landlord saw it lose it’s way. However the sale to a private owner who had made it independent of any brewery has seen a period of stability where food in particular seems to have been really focused on. And the food was great. My green veg risotto was delicious and my partner’s pie was everything you want from a pie - crispy pastry filled with rich gravy and tender meat. The crumble we had for pudding wasn’t quite as standout as the main but still nice. Good selection of drinks behind the bar and friendly staff. It was a shame that it was pretty empty (was a Thursday night though) as there was a distinct lack of atmosphere which would have been sorted if it had...
Read moreNot a good experience - A 10 minute wait before being taken to our reserved table trying to find someone to ask - We had to wait for our drinks to be delivered for over 20 mins - they were only brought when asked for them again. After waiting a long tme for our main course, this was then brought to the table which had obviously had been kept warm in the kitchen for the staff to bring to the table - the Sea Bass was dry, my Chicken roast had items missing which were on the menu and the carrot was raw (had not even been cooked) - We also felt the starter was disapointing . We mentioned this to the person who advised us she was the manager , who advised they had staff sick that night. Other customers were also complaining items were missing from their meals and another couple could be seen asking where their meal was. (Sunday...
