I love this church and visited it often when I lived in Brighton some years ago. Last Christmas I stayed with my son and his family, and as Christmas is not Christmas without a service, I chose St Bartholomew's.
The church looked magnificent, was sympathetically decorated , and the singing was wonderful, but I had to leave early because of the incense , which I had the full benefit of sitting near the front. The warden in charge of the offensive substance was swinging it with such enthusiasm as to cause a white out, hiding alter and those officiating from view. Really O.T.T. I suffer from asthma, and could feel my throat and lungs constricting, so I left with my son, before I had a full blown attack. I sing in a small village choir and attend Christmas service on a smaller scale, but still with all the atmosphere of love and hope.Such a pity that my Brighton Christmas service was spoilt by overdoing the incense. Read moreAlthough I had been inside this church for many a lunchtime service during my working life, I did not expect to see a mere handful of people on Sunday morning as one might expect on a weekday lunchtime service.
The priests were very distant within the confines of the high altar and the worship, although devout, would have really been non-existent but for the handful of singers up in the choir gallery. The sermon was very inaudible.
Although socially pleasing after the service, I fear there is no point in continuing to flog a dead horse in this case. That's hard but, as far as I could make out, true. The Wagnerian era died...
