This review is well overdue for which I apologise. My husband and I discovered this little gem of a bistro on our way back from a horrific day out at Lands Ends during our holiday in Cornwall last October. We were very disappointed with the rip off that is Lands end and were just looking for somewhere to have a coffee and to warm up, when we stumbled across this fantastic little place. We both ordered hot chocolate and a piece of pecan pie and oh my I was in heaven! The chocolate was gorgeously thick and chocolately, which I expect from a hot chocolate. The pecan pie was to die for and was crammed full of nuts. Whilst we warmed up, we checked out the menu and decided that we would stick around and have dinner at the bistro later on before driving back up the coast to Falmouth to our cottage, so we booked a table and went off around the town for a while.
We returned about an hour later and both ordered the fish of the day with home made chips. Now... I'm NOT a big fish eater but this fish was the BEST I have EVER tasted. It was gorgeous! We followed up the fish with 2 fabulous desserts again, although I really couldn't finish my pavlova, so the staff very kindly wrapped it up for me to take home.
The food was exceptional and the staff so friendly, that when we decided to go out on the last night of the holiday, we decided to book a table at the bistro and drive all the way back to Penzance for another fabulous meal in this fantastic bistro.
Yet again we were not disappointed. The food was absolutely stunning and the service was exceptional.
If you ever find yourself wanting a place to eat in Penzance, this is the place to go. I highly recommend this restaurant, I just wish it was closer to...
Read moreI booked the Old Lifeboat for a cosy rainy Monday evening for October 5th. Firstly safety over Covid is some of the best weve seen. Was greeted at the door by a super lovely member of staff who asked us to Check in with NHS scanner, hand sanitizer provided and masks to be worn on entering and walking inside. Taken to our table and offered drinks. This was our first time at the restaurant and we were impressed. It was warm and welcoming, buzzing with a lovely atmosphere of other customers enjoying their meals. We looked through the mouth watering menu and I couldnt resist the fish pie, my partner had the Fish platter. The only negative that I wish to raise is that we did wait nearly an hour for our meals.. it did put a bit of a damper to what could of been a perfect evening. Moving on though, the waitress was super friendly, and the food was really really tasty! Came out hot and clearly very fresh. You could clearly taste the freshness of the fish. Prices were also good. All in all we did enjoy our evening and would return. Book in advance as the restaurant is quite small...but cute! Highly recommend The old Lifeboat in Penzance and give it a strong 5 Star Rating...
Read moreThe food was cooked reasonably well, the service was ok. The location and decor are well presented... the biggest issue here is the clarity of the menu and the staff lack of handling allergies. Each item should be marked clear on the menu I.e Battered blanchbait, salads in dressing etc etc these things are knocked marked clear which is terrible for allergy sufferers.
I asked for the hot smoked platter due to a gluten allergy but for an alternative to the hake goujons. Advised I could have salmon, no crab this was fine 🦀... then the meal turned up with battered blanchbait, gluten bread and salad covered in some sort of dressing... I asked for an alternative and was given mackerel pate and a gluten free brown cob. - this would be fine but simply scraping the food off does not solve the allergy. I have been ill since eating the meal. I would advise allergy sufferers to stay away, much nicer places to eat. I will say the coffee was exceptional, perhaps the nicest part of the meal.
Edited from here.. as stated clearly above ^^ I did say I was gluten free ^^ and your response now warrants a...
