I decided to order the mussels from the Marine as I had a great meal a few years ago, and thought I would give it another try. To my disappointment as I started eating I soon discovered this place has gone very far downhill.

Many of the shells were closed & when an open one was found the mussel inside looked like it exploded, and was completely stuck to each side of the shell, deeming it inedible. I tried to unpick the flesh from the shell, but it just tore, and you were left with tiny fragment of mussel, rather than the plump whole piece of mussel we all know and love. Nearly 90% of the mussels in the bowl were like this, and after paying £15 you expect a decent meal, especially from a restaurant such as the marine.

I have eaten mussels from multiple restaurants across Europe and have never had this issue, so when the waitress came I expressed my concerns and she said she would ask the chef.

She soon came back and gave us a condescending lesson on the anatomy of a Bivalve mollusk, explaining that that’s how mussels are supposed to be once cooked! I explained that I have never had this issue before, especially with so many mussels in one portion. She said that was all the chef told her to say, and they were perfectly edible.

There was no offer to rectify the situation, or even an offer of a partial refund, just a sarcastic lesson on mussels from a clearly incompetent chef through a waitress with a poor attitude.

Evidently there was a serious problem somewhere in the cooking process to result in such a poor meal. This, paired with the bad service and lack of apology means that we will not be visiting this place again.

This is such a shame considering we had a few great meals here pre-covid, but it’s evident the marine is not what it used to be since under...

We have been staying at The Marine for the last 10 years and were very sad to hear of its closure during lockdown. When we discovered it was reopening under new management it seemed the only location for my husband’s birthday celebration meal. We were a large family party with our 4 children and 3 of our grandchildren (12-18 month olds). We requested to be seated in the bar area, but were told they needed us in the back room ‘out of the way’. We had given a preorder and arrived exactly on time. We were shouted at from the moment we arrived with instructions from this person and that in voices louder than the situation warranted and very much passive/aggressive in tone. On several occasions during the meal the waitress serving us was extremely rude and at one point excessively so. It was such a big event for us to have all our children together and enormous effort had been put into giving my husband a really special birthday. I finally felt I needed to speak to the manager about the very poor way we were being treated. His response was that the waitress had had a long day. When we left, having paid the bill of £480, the manager couldn’t even bring himself to say goodbye or thank us for our custom. I was desperately disappointed and so sad that this establishment is no longer the wonderful place it used to be under the...

1st of October, We booked this restaurant for 8:45 Saturday night we turned up early to have a pre meal drink, the person behind the bar, said we have to see him, and pointed to a man at the entrance. We have used this place for a number of years, and always enjoyed the experience, but the man told us our table was occupied, and the man who accepted the booking, got it wrong. The time of night ment we had little chance of getting in anywhere else, the man was not really bothered, coupled with the curt person at the bar who refused to serve us, this was not acceptable, fortunately the Magpie across the road made room for us and saved the day, a completely different class of service, who put the customer first. Our daughter had visited this place back in June, and said it was so disappointing. The old owners had a grip on service and it was a good experience, this new lot need to be re trained in the art of customer service. The one thing that stood out, was the bar area, once so inviting and smart looked un loved and unclean. The staffs attitude was unbelievable, so as you have probably guessed, Avoid this...

We had just landed in Whitby and immediately looked at places to eat as it was getting late. We called ahead to ensure they were still serving food! Venturing out in the wind and rain We got there and were greeted warmly and beckoned to sit down. The whole decor was very befitting of the restaurants name it felt very nautical! For starters, we had tempura oysters which were gorgeous and for mains a crab spaghetti and fish curry with greens on the side. These were also beautifully presented, the spaghetti had lots of large pieces of crab and tasted freshly made , just a little oily? My curry also contained lovely fresh tasting seafood with crispy skin pompoms..genius! The sauce was very ..hmm too much Saffron or something 🤔 the greens consisted of lots of kale etc and was filled to the Brim so very goof value. The service was impeccable with just the one gent serving. Overall great atmosphere and gorgeous food.

Initially we were delighted to find a restaurant that didn't simply put all its fish in batter. Although quite expensive, it was disappointing. I had monkfish, priced at £30 which was over cooked. I was very disappointed as people on another table just before we ordered said it was the best they had had, if not also the smallest portion. To have chips, was an extra £3.95, these were okay but a bit soggy. My wife had the seafood linguine, which was £26. Unfortunately the linguine was also over cook and had absorbed far too much water. I did ask that the chef was told and later the waitress said the chef sent his apologies. We decided to have a sweet, this was more reasonably priced at £6. We had the apple tart, but this too was not great and a little dry. I did not bother to say anything this time. We did not leave a tip here as we were disappointed.

Nice restaurant, but unfortunately we were sat in the back room by ourselves, so very quiet and no atmosphere. I ordered scallops, very nice but VERY small and looked very sparse on the plate. I then had half a lobster, again very nice but VERY small, and very expensive for the size. I was disappointed considering this is a seaside resort and expected the seafood to be "better". Sorry but I've had better lobster thermidor at Lochfine restaurants and some local restaurants. Also it's really just a fish and seafood restaurant (which is what I wanted) but if you are looking for other options I wouldn't recommend. The service was good and our waitress was very friendly but I wouldn't go back.
