We visited this evening for our 17th anniversary meal and left feeling disappointed. There were several staff around the bar when we arrived at 6:20pm, but it took a while for any to acknowledge us, so first impressions weren’t great.
It didn’t take very long for our orders to be taken, but we kept having to repeat ourselves when ordering (maybe the staff member was new). There’s no soft drinks menu which was very odd, only wine and cocktails? When we queried this at the table, we weren’t told what drinks were available, so just guessed what to order.
The food took over an hour to arrive and was disappointing - very overpriced for what it was. Nobody came over within this hour to see if we wanted any additional drinks, and I wasn’t given appropriate cutlery so had to request it.
After waiting an hour for the food, we asked how long our food would be and the waitress said the kitchen was busy, and used an excuse that because I ordered lamb, it takes longer to cook. This came across argumentative, and even so, if that was the case then staff should have made this clear when taking the order, and asked if we were happy to wait over an hour - as our answer would have been no.
Once the food came, the waitress asked if it was worth the wait - which I felt was inappropriate. My dish was mediocre. My Husband seemed to enjoy his more. My meal certainly wasn’t worth £35.
Staff then took ages to clear the plates and bring the bill, so we got up and asked for it, before they’d bothered to clear the table.
We had a small dog with us and I’d telephoned beforehand to ask if it was dog friendly, to which they said they loved dogs and our dog would be made more than welcome. One member of staff showed an interest, but none of the others cared - and there weren’t any treats of any kind, or any water bowls offered, like in some dog friendly places.
I said at the time of booking that it was for an anniversary but nobody wished us happy anniversary either.
We wouldn’t return and wished we’d booked somewhere else. We spent almost £80 and felt that it was a...
Read moreWe had a lovely stay at The Sheep & Penguin, we were there for 2 nights in early May. The manager and all the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We were very impressed by the quality of the bedding, towels and all the furnishing and fittings. The bed was very comfortable. The shower was lovely. Everything was spotlessly clean. The room had tea and coffee making facilities and a fridge. Unfortunately on the first night, which was a Saturday night we had the window open, because the room was so hot, and there was a lot of noise from people in the street, which obviously wasn’t the hotel’s fault, but it kept my partner awake, so he asked if we could change rooms and they changed us to a room at the back of the building. They were happy to move us and very helpful in this regard. There is no parking at The Sheep and Penguin, but there are pay and display car parks a short ( 2 min?) walk away. We never struggled to find a space even though it was a bank holiday weekend, and the parking charges are very reasonable. We had dinner at The Sheep and Penguin on our first night, and the food was excellent. We ate at a Thai restaurant on our 2nd night, ( I think the Thai Dragon), in Wells which was very good. Wells was smaller than we had anticipated, but a small quaint place with some nice independent shops and cafes. The cathedral, and Bishops palace and gardens are worth a visit and a tour of the prison in Shepton Mallet is very interesting. All in all a very pleasant...
Read moreI stayed in the Adelie penguin room. It is very beautifully decorated in pastel pink and green tones. The bed was very comfy with lovely crisp white bedding and attractive throw cushions. This room has a large bathroom with a modern walk in shower ( no bath) BUT ….||I’m just really surprised that no other review has mentioned that this hotel is right next to a busy set of traffic lights! Even with my earplugs in I could still hear traffic noise. (The Adélie penguin room is at the front of the hotel) The sash window is very pretty but no good for cancelling traffic noise! I didn’t get a good sleep. ||There is a big beautiful Roman blind at the window but there is a street light right by the traffic lights and hence there was a strong orange glow at either side of the Roman blind at night. Also there is a smoke alarm above the bed which flashes with two green lights every ten seconds! Luckily I brought a sleep mask with me! Again, I’m surprised that no other review has mentioned this. ||When I got back from my day out at around 5pm I was surprised to see that although the complimentary tea / coffee tray had been refreshed, no one had made the bed and no one had cleaned the bathroom sink. There were clean towels however. The litter bin had not been emptied. ||Finally, I booked this through an online website which said breakfast included but when I arrived the manageress (?) Lotta said that they only do breakfast at...
