Spent a week in York eating too much and seeing lots of history. We walked past the York Roast Co. Restaurant a few times and it looked eye waveringly yummy and we said we would try it one evening. So we ordered Yorkie pud beef roast, Yorkie pud beef and turkey roast and a naked turkey roast, (without the Yorkshire pud) and a pot of gravy. (3 of us). They had been let down with a delivery so didn’t have any wooden cutlery left so we instead decided to take it home as we were only a very short walk back to our rental. The food was given to us in a shallow thin cardboard box but no bags were offered. ( same option wither you take away or eat in). We hurried back home to scoff the goodies. Quite disappointed to say the least. The roast potatoes were strange, not roasted to how I would describe roasted and barely cooked with that hard dense texture you get with uncooked spuds. The veg was nice. The beef and turkey were nice too. The Yorkshire pud was really nice, the stuffing was fairly tasteless and stodgy. The biggest letdown was the gravy. It was very watery and as far as I could tell, completely tasteless. As an experience, it was an interesting concept, takeaway roast! But its execution was well below what its visuals would suggest to someone walking past. I have no idea how people were actually able to eat this in the restaurant with small wooden cutlery and out of a shallow thin cardboard box, (no plates that I could see), as it was quite tough to cut up at home with regular steel cutlery. Great idea, takeaway roast, and I’m sure the other options on the menu would have been a better choice. But for the love of roasts, sort out your gravy, it would have literally turned a below par plate of food in to something special. Wasn’t good value either. They were short staffed too but the two staff there were there were really nice and still able to be nice and helpful. But the visitors just kept coming through the door just as we had seen every time we walked past. Very popular but could be a total gem of a place if they ever manage to get the gravy right. I’d bet it’s mostly tourists that visit and probably don’t go...
Read moreI visited the York Roast Co. around 1pm after hearing plenty of praise about it being one of the go-to spots for a proper Yorkshire pudding roast in York. Naturally, I had high expectations going in. The queue wasn’t too bad - just two people ahead of me - but even with that, the experience began to falter before I even placed my order.
The service was noticeably slow and inattentive. Staff behind the counter were preparing food at a very sluggish pace, and although a few customers were waiting for their orders, those of us in the queue to order weren’t acknowledged at all - not even a basic “we’ll be with you shortly.” It created a slightly awkward atmosphere. When it was finally my turn, I received the same cold, disinterested service - no eye contact, no real engagement, just a transactional exchange with little care.
I ordered the classic Yorky Pud Roast, hoping the food would redeem the service. There was ample seating upstairs, which was a plus, and I easily found a quiet spot. Unfortunately, the food didn’t meet expectations either. For £10.50, the portion and quality left a lot to be desired. The dish came with about five small chunks of carved pork (no pork scratchings were offered, despite being part of the appeal), a handful of boiled carrots and green beans that tasted quite plain, and a piece of stuffing that was so hard it was difficult to eat. The roast potatoes lacked crispness and flavor, and the gravy - while plentiful - was incredibly bland. The Yorkshire pudding, which should have been the highlight, had the texture and taste more akin to a thick pancake than a fluffy, crisp pud.
All in all, I walked away quite disappointed. Maybe I caught them on an off day - they didn’t seem particularly busy when I arrived, though it got more crowded as I was leaving - but based on this visit, I struggle to see what the fuss is about. With so many great places to eat in York, I expected something a bit more special, especially from a place with such a strong reputation. Not sure I’d...
Read moreWould rate the service 0 stars if possible. Whilst the food itself was incredible, both in taste, quality and wait time, the service at the Low Petergate branch ruined the experience entirely. We were served originally by the rudest man I’ve ever experienced in hospitality, he failed to understand a very simple order and kept questioning everything I said. For example, I asked for two ham wraps and a ham and turkey wrap, when I said mustard on one of the just ham wraps he very rudely interrupted me saying “what do you mean just ham, you mean the normal one” in such a patronising tone. Everything became so over complicated when it really didn’t need to be and at one point had myself, my mother in law and partner trying to clarify to which he again rudely proclaimed “there’s 3 of you talking to me”, “you’re all talking to me at once” and repeated it 3 more times whilst walking away from the counter huffing and puffing. Must clarify, at no point were three of us speaking at once, which would understandably confuse anyone; we simply went through one at a time and re clarified what we each wanted - which he still failed to understand. We got three incorrect wraps that were none of what we ordered. Never caught his name but he had a ginger/blonde beard and wore glasses. The other staff were not reading out the full receipt numbers when calling out peoples orders, only the last two numbers, leaving everyone very confused who were waiting; everyone looking at each other unsure who’s food was being called. To then be greeted with snappy tones from the staff when they then clarified as if the customers just hadn’t bothered to collect their food, when it was them not reading out people’s actual order numbers. Again, the food itself was incredible, but the service as a whole really just ruined the...
