My husband and I came for Christmas lunch and, I have to say, we were left a little disappointed with our food. The service and location were faultless, everyone was so friendly and welcoming and we got a free drink and fresh bread on arrival which was a very nice surprise! However, the mushroom ravioli was not quite what we expected. It was more of a watery soup with two quite stodgy pasta slices. Perhaps I misunderstood the menu but it was very bland and just not great sadly. The mains were much better, the beef wellington, however, was far too peppery it was rather overwhelming and I couldn’t finish it. It was also not really what I would class a beef wellington, it was more of a sirloin steak slice wrapped in pastry. Again, the meat and pastry were lovely, just too peppery and again not what I was expecting. Pudding was also quite disappointing unfortunately. My husband’s rice pudding was very dry and he mentioned the rice itself was still crunchy, but the taste itself wasn’t bad at all. My dark chocolate torte was very nice, my only complaint is that they forgot the vanilla ice cream that was mentioned on the menu, the richness of that pudding really needed the ice cream to accompany but still very nice. For £180 we definitely expected everything to be included! As it was Christmas and the staff were so lovely (and of course very busy) we didn’t want to make a fuss and add any additional stress. We have visited Mill on the Exe numerous times and have always been very happy with the food and service so we will certainly be returning, just we’re having an off day I suppose!

Gorgeous, historic pub on the Riverside, near the station just a little after the roundabout. Seating , on Terraces under the Willows and up outside?, the Conservatory . The Mill On The Exe looks fabulous before you get inside. Very old interior with beautiful decor and furnishings to complement the atmosphere. Plenty of tables, all told. They have rooms - which I didn't know about - but must check them out , as, we are going daily, to the RD&E hospital- if we feel exhausted after our journeying from Holsworthy - we might be lucky to get a room. We ate an early just before 6pm and were more or less, alone in the Conservatory, next to a very large fire in the middle, which is obviously great in Winter? Lots of customers were outside on the riverbank in the Sun.🌞 All the staff were extremely cheerful chatting while taking our order and when they passed by.The Toilets were very nice- which is one thing, that I judge an establishment on. We ordered the Light Fish and Chips and a Steak Salad, both washed down with a pint of bitter and very nice large glass Rosè .We were given a bottle of water to wash the meal down with, very nice, but were too full, to look at the deserts menu.... All in all- we wished to stop so many times, as we passed, but after finally doing so, have found a gem, that is not just for Students. Highly recommend.

Only a short walk from Exeter St Davids railway station, we were very surprised at how lovely the location was for the venue. On arriving at the venue, we received a friendly welcome and ordered our drinks which were nicely chilled as it was a very warm day. We took our drinks to the outside garden and found a seat right alongside the river Exe, it was such a peaceful and tranquil location. If we hadn’t had already made arrangements to have been somewhere else a bit later, we could have easily spent many hours sat in the sunshine watching the water flow by There was just two in our group, but you could easily pop in on your own, or go with a much bigger group. If was nice to see so many do walkers there with their dogs well behaved enjoying the rest in the sunshine The Mill on the Exe is a definite must visit if you are in the area, we travelled by train but there is a large car park on site as well and is only a short walk from Exeter City centre and all the attractions etc that you would wish to visit. There are 14 rooms available to stay in, so would definitely be a location to come and visit again and make a weekend of the visit.

Starters: SALT & PEPPER SQUID. Terrible. I received some unidentifiable deep-fried balls that neither I nor my partner could eat. They were so salty and yet so tasteless. Main: SQUID AND PRAWN LINGUINE. Terrible. I asked to swap linguine for tagliatelle and luckily I got that, but once I received the course it was a disaster. It was incredibly salty and had nothing remotely Italian in it (if you cook pasta...). There was coriander in it which made it taste like a Thai dish, and very randomly they put some fennel in it too. Parsley, fennel and coriander you guessed it, awful combination, ESPECIALLY on pasta. I did not know there was CHORIZO in my dish, it was not mentioned in the title and was just conveniently hidden in the ingredients list. The tagliatelle was overcooked, the whole dish was an utter disappointment and disgust. To me, it felt more like they threw leftovers in a pan and called it a dish. At this point I was hungry (I didn't eat all day that day so I could be hungrier and have more food once there) and I had a couple of bites and then I had to push it away before feeling sick. Dessert: WARM CHOCOLATE BROWNIE. Vanilla scoop tasted like meds, brownie was nothing like chocolate more like a burnt pan. No redemption there. Wine: Whispering Angel. The angel whispered to me to run away, and fast. Because not even the £12 wine bottle (sold by them for 45) was ok. Bitter and dry as hell, Devil's Whisper more like. Water: at the beginning, they asked me if we wanted water on the table. I was shocked we've been served tap water. TAP WATER! Who even drinks that anymore? Even the water tasted like bleach. At the end of the night, I asked if I could have a canned or bottled Coke and they only had a draft, so I didn't get it, I wasn't in for another disappointment. My partner did not like his food much either, although he politely forced himself to have more food than I did. This was on OUR ANNIVERSARY. I did not eat anything. The place was incredibly beautiful and that's one of the reasons why I was so shocked that the food did not reflect at all the beauty of the place. What a shame! I won't be going there again and won't recommend to my family and friends. The staff was very good too, I wonder if they had any food from their workplace. I was happy when we left and still so...

Ate here last night, with family before a wedding. Booking the table was easy online and they even had the option when booking to make it a wheelchair accessible table which was a lovely touch and nice to be included rather than be an after thought!

The venue is lovely, very tastefully decorated and the atmosphere was homely and welcoming and whilst it was busy, it didn’t feel crowded like some places do. The main entrance is accessible and there is a large disabled toilet, however those who have a large electric wheelchair would struggle to get it alongside the toilet to side transfer. I managed to get my small active chair though.

The food was amazing. So lovely and refreshing to see creative vegan options for once. I had the banana blossom ‘fish’ and chips and wow it was wonderful! Many of my table hadn’t heard of this before and all who tried a piece said how great it was. Other mains that were had were scampi, fish and chips, burger, pie and fish curry. Everyone said their mains were delicious and all were very generous portions. Desserts were just as good. I had the vegan waffle (nice change to usual vegan option of fruit or sorbet!) and it was really nice, though a knife and fork instead of a spoon would have been easier. Other desserts included panna cotta, chocolate brownie and various ice cream flavours. The bar is also well stocked.

All staff were friendly, polite and hard working. Our main server, a young woman who was talking about hoping to go to university in Bristol was lovely and friendly and we all wish her well with her exams! Their iPad system worked well and wait times for food, even though it was a busy evening, were absolutely spot on. Sadly we don’t live near Exeter otherwise this would be a firm favourite, however if we ever visit the area again or move close; we will...

I have eaten here often on my yearly visits to Exeter and was looking forward to having a meal here yesterday evening. I was served by a charming waitress. I was disappointed with the menu which bore no resemblance to the one on the website or, as far as I can recall, any I have previously seen. I eventually settled on a chicken, bacon and mushroom pie. I can honestly say I cannot recall when I have had a worse meal. The pie filling was sludge and tasted like smokey bacon crisps! The pastry was not shortcrust as the waitress thought but a rather unflaky flaky pastry. It was served with very dry chips and a beef gravy which resembled Bisto. The mushy peas were ok but not something I would have had had I any choice. I confess that I did, when asked by the waitress if everything was ok, say that it was - there seemed little point in complaining at that stage as it was getting late. However, I left a substantial amount and expressed my concern when she came to clear our plates. I find it extraordinary that any chef with a reputation to maintain could have ever tasted what he/she was serving! My partner's meal was acceptable but no more. Fortunately, the charge for my meal was taken off the bill. I'm not sure I would return to eat here as the menu is so uninspiring now and my experience with the food so very poor. In addition to the above I would also mention that as we finished our drinks prior to leaving a glass fell off the adjacent table shattering and sending shards of glass centimetres from my feet. When the waitress came to clear it away, I commented that it was rather dangerous particularly for small children after she told me that it was a frequent occurrence. It would appear that management are not concerned about diner's safety when they fail to address a recurring...
