Starters: SALT & PEPPER SQUID. Terrible. I received some unidentifiable deep-fried balls that neither I nor my partner could eat. They were so salty and yet so tasteless. Main: SQUID AND PRAWN LINGUINE. Terrible. I asked to swap linguine for tagliatelle and luckily I got that, but once I received the course it was a disaster. It was incredibly salty and had nothing remotely Italian in it (if you cook pasta...). There was coriander in it which made it taste like a Thai dish, and very randomly they put some fennel in it too. Parsley, fennel and coriander you guessed it, awful combination, ESPECIALLY on pasta. I did not know there was CHORIZO in my dish, it was not mentioned in the title and was just conveniently hidden in the ingredients list. The tagliatelle was overcooked, the whole dish was an utter disappointment and disgust. To me, it felt more like they threw leftovers in a pan and called it a dish. At this point I was hungry (I didn't eat all day that day so I could be hungrier and have more food once there) and I had a couple of bites and then I had to push it away before feeling sick. Dessert: WARM CHOCOLATE BROWNIE. Vanilla scoop tasted like meds, brownie was nothing like chocolate more like a burnt pan. No redemption there. Wine: Whispering Angel. The angel whispered to me to run away, and fast. Because not even the £12 wine bottle (sold by them for 45) was ok. Bitter and dry as hell, Devil's Whisper more like. Water: at the beginning, they asked me if we wanted water on the table. I was shocked we've been served tap water. TAP WATER! Who even drinks that anymore? Even the water tasted like bleach. At the end of the night, I asked if I could have a canned or bottled Coke and they only had a draft, so I didn't get it, I wasn't in for another disappointment. My partner did not like his food much either, although he politely forced himself to have more food than I did. This was on OUR ANNIVERSARY. I did not eat anything. The place was incredibly beautiful and that's one of the reasons why I was so shocked that the food did not reflect at all the beauty of the place. What a shame! I won't be going there again and won't recommend to my family and friends. The staff was very good too, I wonder if they had any food from their workplace. I was happy when we left and still so...
Read moreAte here last night, with family before a wedding. Booking the table was easy online and they even had the option when booking to make it a wheelchair accessible table which was a lovely touch and nice to be included rather than be an after thought!
The venue is lovely, very tastefully decorated and the atmosphere was homely and welcoming and whilst it was busy, it didn’t feel crowded like some places do. The main entrance is accessible and there is a large disabled toilet, however those who have a large electric wheelchair would struggle to get it alongside the toilet to side transfer. I managed to get my small active chair though.
The food was amazing. So lovely and refreshing to see creative vegan options for once. I had the banana blossom ‘fish’ and chips and wow it was wonderful! Many of my table hadn’t heard of this before and all who tried a piece said how great it was. Other mains that were had were scampi, fish and chips, burger, pie and fish curry. Everyone said their mains were delicious and all were very generous portions. Desserts were just as good. I had the vegan waffle (nice change to usual vegan option of fruit or sorbet!) and it was really nice, though a knife and fork instead of a spoon would have been easier. Other desserts included panna cotta, chocolate brownie and various ice cream flavours. The bar is also well stocked.
All staff were friendly, polite and hard working. Our main server, a young woman who was talking about hoping to go to university in Bristol was lovely and friendly and we all wish her well with her exams! Their iPad system worked well and wait times for food, even though it was a busy evening, were absolutely spot on. Sadly we don’t live near Exeter otherwise this would be a firm favourite, however if we ever visit the area again or move close; we will...
Read moreI have eaten here often on my yearly visits to Exeter and was looking forward to having a meal here yesterday evening. I was served by a charming waitress. I was disappointed with the menu which bore no resemblance to the one on the website or, as far as I can recall, any I have previously seen. I eventually settled on a chicken, bacon and mushroom pie. I can honestly say I cannot recall when I have had a worse meal. The pie filling was sludge and tasted like smokey bacon crisps! The pastry was not shortcrust as the waitress thought but a rather unflaky flaky pastry. It was served with very dry chips and a beef gravy which resembled Bisto. The mushy peas were ok but not something I would have had had I any choice. I confess that I did, when asked by the waitress if everything was ok, say that it was - there seemed little point in complaining at that stage as it was getting late. However, I left a substantial amount and expressed my concern when she came to clear our plates. I find it extraordinary that any chef with a reputation to maintain could have ever tasted what he/she was serving! My partner's meal was acceptable but no more. Fortunately, the charge for my meal was taken off the bill. I'm not sure I would return to eat here as the menu is so uninspiring now and my experience with the food so very poor. In addition to the above I would also mention that as we finished our drinks prior to leaving a glass fell off the adjacent table shattering and sending shards of glass centimetres from my feet. When the waitress came to clear it away, I commented that it was rather dangerous particularly for small children after she told me that it was a frequent occurrence. It would appear that management are not concerned about diner's safety when they fail to address a recurring...
