We had the most incredible experience at this city-centre pub, hotel, and wedding venue in Exeter for my sister’s wedding party yesterday. From start to finish, everything was perfectly organised, creating the exact day she had hoped for.||The location is fantastic—right in the heart of the city with parking just over the road and the train station within walking distance. The venue itself has a unique and stylish charm, making it stand out from more traditional settings.||We started the celebrations outside under the sails, which created a lovely atmosphere, especially with the heaters keeping us comfortable when the sun went in. The orangery was exclusively ours, offering plenty of seating for guests who wanted to relax and catch up. The team set up all the décor perfectly, and the live singer outside added an amazing touch that everyone enjoyed.||As the evening went on, we moved downstairs to the cellar bar, where the party really got going. This space has a fantastic vibe, with uplighting setting the mood just right. The DJ’s music was crisp and well-balanced, and having our own private bar with no long queues made all the difference! Another big plus was the facilities—having toilets both upstairs and downstairs was really convenient for guests.||The food was excellent, both in the evening and at breakfast the next morning. There was plenty of variety, it was served hot, and they catered for everyone’s needs. Service throughout was absolutely faultless. Jon, the events planner, had everything down to a T—his professionalism, organisation, and friendly manner made the whole process seamless. The hotel manager, Kirsty, was also incredibly attentive and went out of her way to make sure everything ran smoothly.||A number of us stayed overnight, and the hotel rooms were spacious, well-presented, and had great bathrooms with large showers. The whole place has a cool, quirky layout, working with the character of the old building rather than against it, which added to the charm. Everyone raved about it—and still are today!|Due to mobility we requested a room on the lower floor which they catered for no questions asked.||The staff were well-organised, professional, and smart-casual, fitting in well with the relaxed but stylish wedding atmosphere. It was clear they genuinely enjoyed being part of the day too.||If you’re looking for a unique wedding venue, a great place to stay, or just a cool spot for a night out in Exeter, we couldn’t recommend this place more. A massive thank you to everyone involved for making it such a...

We booked City Gate as a last minute little getaway between Christmas and New Year (without the kids!) some much needed time for us. We were not disappointed.
Located within a quick walking distance of the city centre, parking areas and train stations it’s ideal.
The room - we loved our room. Had everything we needed for our stay, comfy bed, sky tv was a bonus, nice decor, area to make drinks and get ready. Our room was warm, but the air con was perfect. We made use of our mini bar but not to the extreme, mainly because we would go to the bar if we wanted a drink.
Bathroom - was large and decor has been well thought off. We loved the shower. The toilet did make a loud noise when it flushed, but when you put this into consideration of cost and service you receive from the staff it’s minor and something you can live with.
Food - now this, we cannot rate the food high enough, breakfast is lovely, both continental and cooked (continental, full English and eggs Benedict fans here) Coffee is a good one too. We also booked a roast on our stay - one of the best roasts I’ve had, great selection, cooked to our liking in every way. Thank you chefs!
Now when we say the staff go above and beyond, we were greeted every time with a smile and friendly chat. That in my book always sets a good tone. However, on our stay unfortunately my husband started having chest pains, which resulted in him needing medical assistance and getting to hospital. We were treated by all the staff with care, respect and they remained calm when we possibly weren’t, which helped me a lot (thank you) we were given a quiet area to wait, a staff member waited outside (in the cold) for the ambulance and one came in whilst not on shift to sit with us, both staff members reassured us throughout and helped us when we were advised to make our own way to hospital, they called a taxi on our behalf, sorted our room with what we needed and even worked beyond that to make sure we would be accommodated with them for extra time if we needed it.
We cannot thank you all enough, we wish we could remember everyone’s names, but know this thank you is a genuine heartfelt one to you all. I do remember Kirsty - thank you Kirsty.
We will visit again (if you’ll have us without the drama and us actually getting to play the bingo we were looking forward to trying for the first time! 😂)
Again, thank you for a wonderful stay and helping us in an unexpected...
Read moreI hated my stay at this hotel. There were various issues with my stay here.|For starters, the advertised price of the boutique twin room for two days with breakfast was priced on their own website at £250, however, I was charged £328, when I questioned about this the member of staff said that the prices varied per day, but that was not made clear on their site and if you are advertising fixed rates the two don't match.||The second issue was I had a change of plans and had to cancel the second night. Instead of being refunded £164, I was refunded £80, which was still taxed and so have ended up with £67. ||The room has many items which are individually priced so don't fall for it, as this will largely increase the cost of your stay. There are few amenities and they seem to want to stock as few tea and coffee items per night which is a ripoff.||The breakfast offering is also very minimal, for example they say seasonal pastries which turned out to be 10 plain croissants and 1 pain au chocolat, there were no danish pastries, or breakfast muffins. There is no access to takeaway options for a quick breakfast as everything has been transferred into containers such as the breakfast cereals which there were only four kinds. Any jams, or spreads were also in glass containers which represents significant health and safety issues because what if for example, one of the containers was chipped or cracked there is a risk to life with glass consumption. Another issue relates to people's personal hygiene with food there were spoons left out for people to serve but what happens if they double use the spoon to taste the spreads and then use them with the spreads. Another issue is allergen cross contamination immedaitely next to the spreads where items containing nuts and seeds are, there is a risk of allergen contamination if spoons are shared across various items. The fruit offered was minimal and felt quite wet to the touch.||The hot options are limited to a full breakfast, a vegetarian alternative or a couple of egg dishes e.g. florentines. I had requested for portions of spreads which they do not offer.||I will be taking this matter further to trading standards and environmental health as staff need retraining and the way the hotel operates is against the Trade...
