I’m officially addicted to the starter called “Khasi Keema” hence the four succulent photos! This resembles the more commonly known version of Seekh Kebab in an Indian/Bangladeshi restaturant. What makes these super good is you get three pieces not two and they come out on a sizzling iron dish - a bit like most authentic Indian restaurants USED to do but many bypass this piece of theatre to keep things easier (a big shame in my opinion). All the food at the Gurkha Chef is super tasty, great and the staff are superb, personable and always very pleased to see you…all in all it’s just fantastic. I really hope this review helps and pursuades you get to try the amazing KHASI KEEMA!!!

Nice place for dining. Great food with good service. We loved the food here. Me and my husband's most favorite dishes(oops I forgot the exact name) are keema naan/roti and special lamb(khasi) curry. Mushroom rice is also great. We ordered the curry to be very spicy. And we enjoyed our meal.Last day we tried popadam here. It's served with 4 item mango chutney, lime pickle, raita and salad. Raita and chutney were superb. Whenever we go to Newbury we just loved to be there for at least once for dinner.

Food was tasty. Meats are flavoured well as all Nepalese food tends to be. Service is fantastic, all staff are friendly and attentive to your needs. The portion sizes could be slightly bigger for the price you pay in my opinion. But overall happy with the experience there

PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS POST.

Awful! I have used this restaurant for six or seven years, when they had the old small place they were faultless.

They have since moved next door and the food, service and staff attitude has gone South! I today ordered a delivery - which in recent times have become smaller and smaller - the driver called and said he was at our gates. He was not. I tried to discuss the issue with him but he could not understand me. I therefore said please take it back and refund the order.

I then received a call from the manager who said " If you take the meal we'll give you 50% off" That was 20 minutes after the cancellation. Surely the food would have been cold!!!

On asking for the refund I was told to hold the line. When I was finally able to speak to him again I was informed He / they were unable to refund the money as they had never done it before and it wasn't working.

I therefore said "Keep the money and expect some dodgy reviews" Which is where we are now.

Be Careful!!!

Further to the above, I was called the day after this occurred by Sunil - the actual manager. He was most apologetic and informed me he had investigated the incident with all the staff on duty that evening. Everything he said concurred with the actual events and seemed most satisfactory. I was offered a complimentary meal - which I declined as I felt that was not the reason for my review, however he also explained that the card machine was new and at the time in question he was the only one who was trained fully in it's use. He happily refunded the cost of the meal and all is now well again.

I would recommend anyone gives this restaurant a go as the food is after all "EXCELLENT" Everyone has the odd bad day at the office and it is the way the issue is dealt with at the end. They were most efficient in dealing with the issue and I am entirely happy with the outcome.

Thank You Sunil ...

We dropped in today for lunch and the first thing that we were greeted was with was free poppadoms - great; but with chutney that had clearly been kept from the last table of the night before - oh dear!

You could tell it was from the night before because the mango chutney had hardened dribbles all around the edge of the bowl and the lime chutney bowl still had dribbles down the outside of it that they had made only half an attempt to wipe off before they put it back in the fridge to dry off.

I ordered something with a name I can't remember which I think was supposed to resemble an onion bhaji. I don't think it was meant to be soggy though. This came with two delightfully watery dips in a shared bowl which had spilled from one side into the other in a rather odd and decidedly unattractive way.

How do they offer so many different curries on the menu we wondered? We ordered two very different curries and were provided with an answer. They both looked identical.

My curry was apparently a blend of 17 different herbs and spices, however I could only taste one before my mouth started to ignite.

Service was ok but not really consistent with a ratio of 7 waiters to 2 customers. Rather considerately they did however allow us to experience all of the waiters, as a different waiter served us each time; a bit like a tag team.

We didn't try...

Bad customer service and disappointing food. Our waiter was what only can be described as sullen. He even walked away from the table next to us while they decided on their drink order leaving them talking to themselves. We waited ages for our starter (it wasn't that busy) chicken was dry & over cooked. My main meal was supposed to be medium it was very bland. My partners main was so salty it was inedible & was replaced. This meant we ended up eating at different times. No plate to eat from or spoon to serve it so had to ask. Very sloppy customer service. We had a pint of diet coke that was flat. I asked for the coke to be taken off the bill & for a discount for the bad food & poor experience overall. We were told they don't make the coke so we would have to pay for it as not their fault it was flat but ours for not having ice. Eventually after much discussion we were given a discount & not charged for the coke. The whole experience ruined our evening. How they delt with our genuine complaints left us dumbfounded. How not to treat a customer! Awful...
