We went to Windermere on a short break to meet up with our family and had one evening spare. Checking the local eateries, spotted Hooked and decided to book a table for dinner. This was an excellent decision. Hooked is a small restaurant specialising in seafood and has around 20 covers. We were phoned a few minutes before our reserved time to say our table was ready. On arrival, we were seated, offered water while viewing the menu. We decided to have a couple of Lindesfarne oysters each while waiting for our starter. So fresh and tasted great. For starters, my partner went for scallops with pork belly. I chose the Squid ink ravioli filled with crab meat. Both starters were beautifully presented and tasted good. To me, scallops are scallops once you are eating dived catch. Very nicely cooked. The squid ink ravioli was simply in another league. I loved it. For mains, my partner went for the fish pie with a side of triple cooked chips. My choice was the pan fried hake with a peppercorn sauce, mashed potatoes, creamed sweetcorn, red onions. The fish pie was very well done and presented. The pan fried hake was a taste sensation. Peppercorn sauce with fish? It was a mild sauce and had a hint of dill oil flavouring it. The red onions were sweet and mildly pickled. The fish was cooked to perfection. Every mouthful was a delight. And all accompanied by a bottle of picpoul de pinet to compliment each mouthful. With the main out of the way, desert was nearly a sticky toffee pudding, but gave way for other homemade choices - pannacotta and raspberry cheesecake. Both were excellent. Throughout, the service was good and each course was delivered quickly after the previous course was finished. An hour and a half after arrival, we were on our way. For my palate, this restaurant is well worth making the effort toseek out. I want to go back soon. Would I change anything? Yes. I would have an extra oyster at the start to make three each. Same starter and main without hesitation. I did think the sticky toffee pudding was probably the better desert for me. And my partner, she would have exactly what I ordered this time, with the delicate pannacotta to finish. A well deserved 5...
Read moreVisited this restaurant for my 30th Birthday and it did not disappoint. I would recommend booking in advance as you may struggle to get a table if you walk in on the day.
For starters, I had the scallops and my partner had the squid ink ravioli. The scallops were presented beautifully, but I felt they were very slightly overcooked. If you ate each part of the starter on its own, it would have tasted quite bland. However, this dish is clearly meant to have each element eaten together, and the flavours really compliment each other, the sweetness of the pea shoot with the saltiness of the bacon was really lovely.
For the mains, as it was my birthday, we thought we would treat ourselves to the lobster. The waitress seemed quite surprised that we were both ordering the most expensive thing on the menu. The lobster was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. For dessert, I had the raspberry cheesecake which was delicious and not too heavy. It was more of a mousse texture than a cheesecake.
The staff were really friendly and attentive, we never felt that we were forgotten about. The only niggle I had was that other tables were asked if they wanted water for the table, we however, did not get the same curtesy . Saying that, by the time the food had started to come out, I forgot to ask for some.
This is a lovely little restaurant which is really good value for money for the quality of food you receive. If you are ever in the area, I would...
Read moreThis is my second time visited here. First time I would give 5 stars, food was good and staff was friendly. Second time, I had very unpleasant experience with the staff. Both time I didn’t make any reservation, first time I simply just went in and got served straight away. Second time I arrived a bit earlier than their opening time, I was waiting patiently outside with another Asian couple, I believe the staff with glasses noticed us but didn’t do anything, so none of us entering in until a pair of English customers opened their door went straight in. The staff didn’t say anything other than Greeting (well, mainly towards the English customers) the English customers asked where should they sit, he said anywhere you want, so all of us find a spot to sit down. Then he looked at the other Asian couple and me almost shouted “excuse me do you have a reservation? “ turns out the other Asian couple has and I didn’t, I feel he really doesn’t want me to be there, and he was very rude towards me, basically try to lecture me that I shouldn’t walk in and sat down anywhere I wanted cuz I didn’t have a reservation. Well, if you really bothered about reservation, please use a big sign outside your shop saying “reservation only” and please don’t tell customers” sit anywhere you want” if you’re not happy about our choices, or simply put a sign outside said wait to be seated… by the time I finished and left(5:00-6:20) there were still 4 tables...
