UPDATE June 2025: *Koottaan now has a new menu with much better descriptions of what the food and drink is. *The curry itself is really tasty (had classic Kerala chicken curry and beef roast); I would like to try them all - I still recommend trying the place to see for yourself. *They now use metal cutlery and metal TV dinner type trays instead of the disposable eco plates and wooden cutlery. *There's a really good 'breakfast' offer which is available all day (any two curries, with roti/porotta and egg for £9.99). *The lunchtime offer is also good value at £7.99 for a curry, side, pappdom and raita. *There was no-one else in the restaurant when I went on a Tuesday evening. *The waiter didn't know when the Koobuns would be available (says 'coming soon' on the menu) and they were out of stock of the drink I wanted.
Initial May 2025 Review - I’ve been a few times and this place is a bit hit and miss, but I’d recommend trying it for yourselves as it is really flavoursome authentic Kerala cuisine.
The place and food has more of a street food vibe though rather than being a full curry house/restaurant.
The curry inside the porottas was something else the first time I visited but the next time, it was really disappointing.
Another time I ordered the Chai Kadi Platter which was tasty but small, and a fritter but then heard the microwave pinging.
The prices are good but that’s because the portions are not huge.
I would also prefer if the restaurant used proper crockery and cutlery rather than recyclable single use eco plates and wooden cutlery. The bowl warped on the bottom from the heat of the dish.
They have updated the look of the menu since they first opened but it looks to contain mostly the same items, just slightly increased the prices.
It would also be nice if the menu explained more what the options were like their original menu, but including the drinks as we tried to google what some of the drinks were at the table.
Also, I’ve tried on three separate times to visit during the day but Koottaan was closed despite their Google times and website stating they were open so I recommend calling...
Read moreLast Friday we decided to give Kaattoo in Taunton a try. Ordering was simple and straightforward – we went for a few curries, poppadoms, vegetarian chickpea curry, and rice of course.
First impressions weren’t great. As I walked in, I noticed the place wasn’t very tidy – tables, walls, and the general dining area didn’t feel clean. My routine in any restaurant or bar is to head to the toilets first to wash my hands before eating, and I was really disappointed with the hygiene standards upstairs. That area was also being used for storage, which is not something customers should be walking past.
The toilets themselves… wow. Such a letdown. Dirty, smeared walls, stained sink, grubby floors, and a toilet pan that clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a while. Honestly, it felt more like a third-world country standard than a UK restaurant.
When the food arrived, portions were very small – not unusual these days, but still disappointing. Everything was extremely spicy, and the menu had no mild options at all. Poppadoms came already crushed on a small plate. The mango sauce was actually very nice, but overall, the food looked and tasted basic and unimpressive – much like the cleanliness of the place.
Prices were okay for what we got, but I wouldn’t pay a penny more. Would I return? Not unless they hire proper cleaners and give the whole place a deep clean, as well as add more variety to the menu for those of us who don’t enjoy very spicy food.
On a positive note, the staff were very nice and helpful. Their English wasn’t perfect, but they tried, and even laughed when I...

Special mention goes to the chef’s signature dish, which stands out for its creativity and rich, layered taste.
The drinks menu is equally impressive, featuring everything from refreshing mocktails to carefully crafted cocktails. Fresh fruit blends and herb-infused waters offer a healthy, invigorating option, while the coffee and tea selection cater to those looking for a warm, comforting beverage. The staff is knowledgeable about pairings, recommending drinks that complement the meal perfectly.
