On Sunday 15th December an elderly couple (aged 80 and 84) were dining for the first time in this restaurant. They had enjoyed their starters and main courses with no complaints. The owner of the establishment had left 15 minutes prior and the elderly lady inquired innocently (but incorrectly) after the member of staff who had been serving her. Not untypical of a person of advanced years, she was not aware of current social norms and expectations and the Manager responded in a manner that left me (and her) appalled and disgusted. His behavior was shockingly sexist, ageist and discriminatory. Instead of quietly ignoring her question, or changing the subject like a professional, he shouted at her and her husband to "GET OUT, THERE'S THE DOOR (gesturing vigorously, LEAVE NOW, YOU DON'T NEED TO PAY", THERE'S THE DOOR (repeated). The lady apologised sincerely and tried to explain that in view of her age/generation she had made an gross error. The response was more vigorous waving of the arms and "THERE'S THE DOOR" in front of the whole restaurant (it's pretty small!). How appalling. The managers overreaction is a disgrace. Perhaps the outburst was influenced was by drink or drugs, who knows. Either way, his lack of measure and professionalism was not what I would expect from a restaurant such as this. The elderly couple left £72 in cash on the table despite being told not to pay. Well done them! Despite their innocent error and subsequent humiliating treatment, they behaved correctly. I do wonder if the manager (who cleared the table himself) put the money in the till or his pocket. [In many years, and 3200 TripAdvisor reports, I have never had to give such a...
Read more2 of us dropped into Plateau to pass some time as I had heard about the cocktails and wanted to try them.
For me a good cocktail has a bit of pomp and ceremony about it, even if it is down to a good garnish it is that look (and of course the taste) that makes it feel special and in m your mind makes you not mind spending the money that a cocktail costs.
We had, 2 x Monks in Venezuela (rum based), 1 x Chai Mezcalita (Tequila based) and a shotgun (I think Bourbon or Whisky based), they were nice enough, no real pomp or ceremony to them, a single sage leaf on the “monks” cocktail, a star anise of the Chai, The cheapest cocktail was £9
We also tried the Terrine which was really tasty and nice, and some bread to eat it with £9 for those two items.
Altogether 4 cocktails, a terrine and bread came to £51.75
The “optional” service charge was pre added to the bill, a practice that I loathe as the onus is on the customer to the get it removed should they feel the need to (how many people will let that slide instantly making your meal 12.5% more expensive), not that there was anything wrong with the service here, but then also does seating you, taking your order and bringing you a couple of drinks and a terrine warrant an extra charge.
The person brought us our bill (and I think brought out one round of our drinks) wasn’t overly friendly either not hostile or anything like that but just going through the motions.
I want to give 3.5 stars but I cannot, and 3 would be too low so...
Read moreI read the reviews of this establishment and felt really good deciding that this would be a good place to have a nice date. I reserved a table ahead of time, making sure my date and I had a place to sit and enjoy a drink, as I heard this was a busy location. After ordering a bottle of wine to share and saying we decided we were uninterested in eating and just wanted to enjoy our wine, a waiter addressed us and asked if we would want to move to the bar, as tables were meant for customers ordering food. You can imagine my amazement as I had taken the time to reserve a place at the establishment and nothing on the website indicated that without a food order, we would be asked to leave our table. I, reluctantly agreed, and said that if we needed to move, we could, and about 5 minutes later, the waiter informed us that we could stay at our table but in the future, should just come to bar instead. In my opinion, this was inhospitable. I had taken the time to reserve a table at the establishment and was later informed that my presence at a table was not as important as a walk-in that wanted to eat. Although our wine was exquisite and we enjoyed the atmosphere, the staff made us feel unwelcome and I am very sad about that. If this venue would prefer clients to have food, despite advertising as a “wine bar” (on Google) I wish they would...
