4.5 stars here. Sonas means happiness in Gaelic. Appropriate. What a wonderful meal. A gourmet experience in a lovely space on Fort William High Street. Even at the size of this restaurant, it felt very intimate. The menu is a smallish, focused group of starters and entrees plus desserts. Our hostess and server were very gracious and handled our questions personably. My DW loves a good bruschetta to start and the one offered here was right up our alley. The tomatoes had so much more flavor than the majority we have eaten in Scotland. The addition of whipped feta created a layer of flavor we felt was outstanding. Another note-the breads here and in Scotland in general have been wonderful. A daily special board was prominent on arrival and both our entrée choices came from that list. My pick was a trio of Venison Sausage atop a cloud of Mashed Potatoes and served with a “beef” gravy that was reminiscent of a holiday roast meal. The sausage was wonderfully herby. Loved every bite. The other entrée pick was the Smoked Salmon Pasta. Penne pasta cooked to an ideal al dente. The sauce and the salmon were delicious if a bit salty. My DW would usually have had some left to take home after a dish like this but there was none of that today. Very enjoyable. If you are anywhere near or staying here, and ready for dinner, see if you can get a reservation at Sonas. You...
Read moreIt’s really nice to see a new restaurant open that is a bit higher end than what is already there.
Service was good but we were in Thursday evening and it felt like the organisation was lacking communication as on more than one occasion we were asked if we wanted more drinks (after having been asked this by someone else only moments before) not sure if the staff are given areas to wait on as this would possibly solve this issue. But it’s good to have to much waiting on rather than having no one pay attention to you :)
Cocktails were really good, vegetarian selection was slim (but usually is in most places 🥲)
The food was really good - I had the halloumi burger, the only feed back would be that it was rather basic and at £14.50 you’d expect maybe a little more thought. Maybe add some grilled veg into the burger. It comes with a large salad leaf, slice of beef tomato and some chopped pickles/gerkins (not listed on the menu, or I would have asked for them to be removed as not a fan) it was a batter bit of halloumi that was significantly smaller than the bun, so could have done with another slice of halloumi to bulk it out a bit. Other than that it was still a nice meal, just maybe needs a bit more oomph in the burger prep!
I will deffo be back as it was still very nice :)...
Read moreFirst time visiting the restaurant and probably the last. Sound harsh, but the quality just wasn't there. 4 adults and 1 child. We booked and they knew we had an infant coming but didn't offer a high chair and we also had to ask for a childrens menu. After getting seated, we were looked after well, drinks, food etc.. The decor of the place was very pleasant to look at. Food arrived all but one plate which took a few minutes longer which was a salad with chicken. 2 of ordered the Lamb Koftas and this is where it all went wrong for us....
The meat was dry and totally unseasoned and not pleasant to eat. The pitta bread was not edible as it was solid. We had to send both of them back which they did and brought us an alternative on the menu.
One of us had a burger 🍔 - no complaints.
I had the Katsu Curry. The chicken was unfortunately flavourless and was only edible because of the sweet Katsu curry sauce. I didn't complain about it and decided to eat it anyway. During the meal I would of liked for someone to ask if I wanted another drink as I had ran out. Shame, as I wanted another drink.
All in all, a very dissapointing visit and for a fairly new establishment it pains me to leave a...
