I recently visited Slate Sugar and Spice Cafe and was highly disappointed. The male server was very rude, zero people's skills and unprofessionally dressed, which set a poor tone for the visit.
The food was equally disappointing—both the pizzas and pastas were subpar, with the pasta being particularly awful. I've seen better food discarded on the streets. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this place to eat.
The portion of pasta had received differently than other customer had. I had to keep it cool, and better post it here then cause a scene. Thank you for the experience.
"Response to your reply"
Thank you for your response. I’d like to clarify that my review was based on experience of your food and service rather than any racist assumptions that you assumed. As a matter of fact we didn't even notice the male staff was Italian as you said.
I had to add ketchup and mayonnaise to your pasta because it was tasteless, soggy, and THIRTSY for life. If your food had a a little bit better taste, I won't be so desperate for additional flavour by using ketchup and mayonnaise which you also provided for customers to use if they need to.
Your explanation about bowls makes little sense. We were one of the only two tables in the whole restaurant. The other table came after us and used three plates. Are you saying that your restaurant only has three plates in total? And why you choose to give the table after ours better plates and noticeably bigger portion when we came earlier than them?
What's the most disappointing is your attitude to customer feedback. Your restaurant always takes a defensive position to any negative feedback from your customer reviews. This is not an open, customer-centred mindset for running a business. We chose your café amongst others in town because it was so quiet with no customers and we wanted to support local business. But your food and service is a disappointment and probably explain why no customers.
Your anti-criticism response to customers feedback showed a bad image of you restaurant. I hope my feedback here encourages you to reflect on both your food and service to ensure better experiences for future customers.
Instead of defending your failures on kitchen handling, try to use your 100% effort on learning to make Pasta, staff hygiene and customer service. Jamie Oliver's pasts way better, he can't cook.
Use your time wisely and accept criticism if you want your kitchen to be successful.
Good luck with the business Thank you for your time.
Best regards,

Read moreDisgusting customer service. The place was packed and its so small you can hardly pretend not to notice people coming in. The staff ignored me from the start. I stood at the counter for several minutes while the person behind the counter made out she was too busy to serve me. She looked at me as I came in then turned to face the wall opposite to the counter when I approached to order a drink. For some reason something must have switched in her mind and she completely lost it. It was bizarre as it came out of nowhere. Thought I'd point out though, there are signs on the tables saying take a seat but it was so busy I wasn't sure whether they could make out whose at what stage of their visit to the cafe so thought I'd help them out. I've been in places where you're supposed to find a table but sometimes it's a gamble on whether you're noticed or not. I have no relationship or connection to anyone in this cafe despite perhaps believing from my review I was in some sort of complicated relationship given the situation just mentioned. I visited on my travels to the area as it was raining fairly badly, and this cafe was more quieter than the other cafes around town.
Having checked the reviews for this place afterwards it's obvious I'm not the only one whose faced these problems from the staff members. Just looking at some of the replies from whoever manages this business page it's apparent they should stay off social media at the very least to not make themselves out to be worse than they already have proved themselves to be as its embarrassing to see the responses they provide! The behaviour I experienced is very similar if not identical to several reviews I have read. They don't seem to want to change the way they act which has resulted in a handful of negative reviews, all of which I can relate to. The longwinded defensive and aggressive replies by whoever owns the social media account proves my point as they seem determined to attack anyone who leaves them a bad review and not focused on fixing their attitudes to improve their customer service skills.
Please bare this mind before visiting here. Unless of course you like picking fights with strangers and seeing who can hate who the most without any...
Read moreWent to quickly grab some food before travelling, I have to say the quality and prices don’t really match up unfortunately. £8.55 for a cream cheese bagel with salmon, really low quality produce (bagel not even toasted!) and just marked up to almost London prices.
Also purchased a bacon and sausage in a ‘specialty bread roll’ which came to £7.75. The sausages and bacon were overdone and felt like they had been cooked hours before (we went in at 10am and it was fairly quiet, I’d expect it to be prime breakfast time so would expect it to be fresh) and the ‘specialty’ bread roll was literally just an average shop bought bread roll.
Very unfortunate as the other reviews looked good but what we’ve received just feels incredibly low on the quality scale in terms of the price. I would heed the other warnings in terms of the quality of food here.
The server was very pleasant and kind though.
Response:
The bagel was not toasted you can even see in the pictures. It may have been flash toasted but it just wasn’t long enough as it was unfortunately still very chewy and raw.
I think it’s great that you source your sausages and bacon from local butchers, however the sausages were very overdone and the bacon was more like jerky. I could only put this down to just poor preparation of the food, if the quality is what you say it is.
Unfortunately the use of ‘high-quality’ produce really doesn’t help if it’s lost in the preparation of the food. We visited your restaurant because it was not a greasy spoon, and we wanted some nice sandwiches to take with us and had no problem paying the fairly high prices because you would believe it ensures quality. The point is that sadly the food that we were given really was more akin to something you would get from a greasy spoon, all for a...
