Tried this new place, on Llandaff Rd in the Laundry Quarter buildings, for the first time Saturday and just loved it. Bustling to a backdrop of good house music (not too loud, but not irrelevant either), the space was modern, clean and atmospheric - giving you a real lift and a buzz about what was to come. We were introduced by our fun and very capable waitress to the menu and the specials, and we jumped right in with Padrón peppers and a couple of starters. The ladies ordered fish (John Dory and Hake) while my son and I opted for the steak sharing plate - we were able to inspect the cuts on offer in the display fridge to make our selection. All very exciting. You can see the influence Jake Lewis has applied to the place from his time as Executive Chef at two Pasture restaurants, including the Cardoff location. The evening went wonderfully as the food promptly arrived and was enjoyed. With an accompanying glass of Albarinio with the Hake dish and Gran Reserva Rioja with the steak it was just beautiful. Read moreJust been to Sonder to celebrate my little sister’s birthday. We were blown away by the service and attention to detail, and the food was just incredible. Glad we booked ahead, as it was full on a Monday night! We loved the atmosphere, which was relaxed and vibrant. Kat, our server, along with the rest of the staff were fantastic. I don’t want to give too many details as it may spoil the surprise for others, but the little touches from the restaurant to mark the occasion were so tasteful and thoughtful; it really elevated the whole experience. We had a range of dishes, including steak, hake, tiramisu, and mac and cheese, but the stand out was the tuna belly sashimi. It was honestly out of this world. We’re a big foodie family and every part of the meal was amazing. I’ll be thinking about this meal for a long time. My friend and I had the tuna tartare, labneh & peppers and the fried chicken to start, the mussels and steak frites for mains, and the tiramisu and cheesecake for dessert. It was all fantastic. Amazing flavours, good portions, nice presentation, and locally sourced! We were celebrating her birthday and they brought her dessert out with a plate that said "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate with some ice cream and crumble. Our server was incredibly observant - she was always available when needed, but didn't hover. The decor is modern, but a tiny bit funky and I was grateful for the background music that was interesting but quiet enough we didn't have to speak loudly/yell to hear each other.
