We holiday in York quite a lot and this chippy is practically on our doorstep. When it's good, it's really good. But you have to check your food order either before you leave or outside as they often make mistakes, as in no fish or a missing chips order. This has happened frequently for us and I have never said anything bad but today was the limit. We bought fish and chips and just chips. The chips were, to be blunt, bloody awful. They were like bones and if the pet shop ran out of cuttle fish bones for people's budgies, then these chips would have been ideal. They should have been chucked in the bin, instead they served them up while frying a new lot at 7.45. (they close at 8pm) on a brighter note, their fish is lovely.

I don't know what has happened to this place but it's changed massively, was great when the cafe was at the back, ordered small haddock n chips twice and the portion sizes went even enough for a child?! Never mind adult!!! ridiculously small fish looked like it had been cut in half! I mean seriously?? a total rip off!!! I'm fuming and sincerely wish I would of went back into the shop, Complete joke! Got home and now going to cook food, never felt so ripped off in my life, this place has seriously gone down the swanny, never going back, avoid if you expect NORMAL portions! I could of had a Sunday dinner for the price of this!!!! Disgusting, you should be ashamed

The unhelpful staff need some staff training. Used the Whitby one and it was great. In my top 3 of worst fish and chips ever. No large chips available, a medium chips is really small, not big enough to share. C'mon, £3.25 for one potato worth. Turns out they were cold and barely cooked so they saved on the heating too. Fish was warm & just cooked but hadn't been in long enough so the batter was closer to runny than crispy, not edible anyway. Not a matter of personal taste, just awful.

5 stars if the fish actually had batter. Let's take a step back shall we, We ordered here after convincing my family that the Leeds market branch was the best fish I ever had which yes it was. Tonight we ordered and we noticed scraps was not on the menu so my mother put it in the description or whatever it is called to include scraps when it came the fish looked half battered with scraps thrown on top of it. This didn't happen at the Leeds market branch so why here? Apart from this the fish was as good as the Leeds one I had. We may order again so a 5th star is possible if this mistake is not repeated. I am all for one off's apart from this one issue which stopped it being PERFECT. delivery time was spot on. Take care Lexus.

Been to the Leeds market one 5 times now 5th time in a row PERFECT I am considering trying here again to see if there is still a difference. Leeds one get's 5 stars any day...

Ordered here last friday. Fish Chips mushy peas and 3 scallops with fish shop curry. They were delivered well before the time stated and the lady was very pleasant. They came hot in really good packaging the fish and chips looked yummy and my husband said they tasted as good as they looked along with the peas. The scallops were good and thick and batter was lovely and the curry was nice . I will be coming back here as they were reallynice and the price was average. Ive tried afew fish shops one near where i live and another down near walmgate and i would not return. But id come here even in the car they were that good ages since i had a good scallop that reminded me of home. Wish you would fry a mars bar now that would bring me back some wonderful mrmories mmmmmm so please give it a whirl Battered Mars Bars put them on...

I’ve been enjoying fabulous Yorkshire fish & chips for over 50 years—and ALWAYS haddock. I have no idea what fish The Fisherman’s Wife are now serving, but is definitely not haddock! It was grey, translucent, mushy and completely tasteless. Anyone who knows haddock knows it’s solid flakes, white and full of flavour. I’m so annoyed I’ve just paid £9.50 for one of the most disappointing portions of fish & chips I’ve ever had. I know times are hard, but please don’t insult discerning customers by serving that abomination and claim it’s haddock! Your food used to be superb—what are you doing?! On the hunt for a new chippy that serves decent food, now! (I took a picture of the fish to show how dreadful it was, but there’s no way to...
