On arriving at the Old Vicarage I was greeted with a sign stating I should reverse into the carpark, have to say the parking area was tight for a Volvo V70. On entering the hotel I couldn't find any members of staff, so had to stand in the reception/bar area for quite awhile before someone eventually came. Then to add insult to injury halfway through helping me check-in another person arrived and Steve the owner started to check the other person in while I once again stood and waited. I told him I had parked in his carpark and my car had swedish plates, as this hotel is in the town centre I assumed he would like to know who was parking there. My room was nice, clean and tidy.. I went shopping for awhile and returned to hotel around 5pm for a nap as I have been travelling for a few days from Sweden and fancied a rest before dinner. I crawled into bed and was falling asleep when my phone rang, it was reception asking if my car was a merc...No! That was the end of my nap...so watched a film on my phone. Dinner, very nice but the staff were a bit over keen and kept wanting to take my plate before I had finished.. Although I had pointed out as soon as I sat down that I was in no rush and had all evening to eat my meal.. Sadly this information fell on deaf ears.. Then to start setting the tables for breakfast at 21.15 I guess was a subtle way of saying you should go to your room now.. But closing all the curtains as well left no doubt I had over stayed my welcome in the restaurant at 21.32.
What a pity as the hotel and food is lovely..
Also but not the hotels fault, the town centre is very run down and dirty.. There are even security guys outside of Boots which gives you an idea how rough the town is, with people sleeping in the doorways of the many closed businesses..
Tip to the owners.. Write the number plates of the cars on the booking in form, then you don't have to phone every customer asking what car they have. Serve/deal with one customer at a time, if someone else arrives politely ask them to wait. If a customer states they are in no rush and have all evening to eat, don't rush the food out and keep hovering... If you want to close the restaurant at 21.00 let the customers know rather than make them feel awkward and in the way.
Shame to have to give you a 2 star rating, but if nothing else it may make you address the...
Read moreWe went here as a celebratory meal after my sisters wedding. Staff were very friendly and welcoming a very beautiful restaurant, old and historic. We had preordered with the exception of 1 member. Starters were really good, the taste was excellent. However, disappointed when our mains came out and 3/5 steaks were stone cold, though manager/owner couldn’t applogise enough and redid the steaks. Once they were back everyone said they were great, so we appreciated that. I had the vegetarian burger and I was really disappointed with this, the patty used did not taste great and it was present very bland. No sauce just a bun, lettuce and patty. They did give me some grated cheese to add to it. I also used some Cajun butter from my partners meal just to add something to it. In the end I took the patty out and just had a chip butty. The fries were great and the coleslaw tasted amazing, so no complaints there. The staff were very helpful and sorted things out quickly, I did advise the they should look at their vegetarian options as the burger was very disappointing, compared to that of my family I feel little effort has been put into the veggie options which is a shame. However, my family did enjoy their meals and the dessert was lovely! Once again staff were very friendly and more than...
Read moreThis is a most fascinating building, thought to have originally been 5 properties with an even more fascinating history. At the heart of the Monmouth Rebellion & links to the Battle of Sedgemoor the whole area oozes history out of every nook & cranny. I was one of a party of 20 & was invited to participate in a paranormal investigation of the Old Vicarage, due to its age & several reports of people experiencing strange things. I would say this is a must stay if interested in the paranormal or history . The rooms are bright, comfy & very clean. Food was exceptional & staff were extremely friendly & very accommodating. The hotel is positioned within the town of Bridgewater with easy access to many other places of interest. It's also dog friendly. I certainly will be returning & wish the current owners every success with creating memorable stays for people. I would say be aware that this is an old building with narrow stairways & sloping floors but really it adds...
