This review follows a lunchtime visit. The Row Barge is situated immediately next to the River Wey, with ducks and swans able to waddle right up to the outdoor tables; a charming scene (though the situation is not a rural paradise). During the day, the Row Barge is without a doubt one of Guildford's quietest settings for a conversation and this also means that drinks service is speedy and friendly. The ale selection is particularly noteworthy, with an emphasis on smaller breweries and distinctive, fine tastes. Full marks for this!
Its kitchen menu is fairly plain and small, but is also low priced and cooked or prepared competently. This pub is not setting out to exclude the locals to turn itself into a gastropub. Likewise, its wine variety is fair and incredibly reasonably priced for the area, but not quite the demonstration tasting at a bespoke wine-merchant, let's say.
In the evenings and weekends, I am told The Row Barge takes on a different atmosphere with sports available on large screens, and music nights too. But a lunchtime professional meeting proceeded smoothly in this simple setting, and at low cost. All guests were able easily to park their cars, which is far from easy in a more central...
Read moreThe pub is a very lovely place and nice enviroment to spend some time at. All is great apart from one specific, very rude member of staff that clearly doesn't know what 'manners' and 'politeness' means. Everytime I have been there before it's been fine, I've been there with friends and family (not drinking as under age) but inn okay with that because I understand it's the law, we have been there long past 8pm in the past, but tonight the rules seem to have changed and the 'very rude' member of staff behind the bar asked me and my friend for ID, when we explained we had none but we wasn't drinking, just there with friends, when she rudely interrupted and said If you have no ID, get out! And pointed at the door. My friend who I was with explained we have been there and was told there was never and issue before, when once again she rudely interupted, pointed at the door and said not my problem. I've always enjoyed going to the row barge and having a good time and laugh, but doubt I will ever again thanks to some people who clearly don't know how to talk to...
Read moreShocking food and service from the outside catering facility. The website menu looked great so we phoned to ask if we needed to book a table or not but when we arrived only food available was from the burger van. Very limited menu choice. Burger, hot dog or nuggets. £5 each. Chips extra £3. Ordered food. Burgers and hot dogs served up. Then after we finished the chops eete served. We saw the "chef" go and get the frozen chips after serving us the mains so took ages to cook and serve. The burgers were poor quality. Hot dog wasn't a hotdog it was a sausage cooked on a hot plate. The hotdog roll was inedible. Rock hard. No onions served as the chef didn't know they were on the menu. She blamed servers. Glass of coke tasted of chemicals. On a positive note my 2 pints of TEA were lovely and the younger table servers were quick, efficient and friendly even with the extra precautions required in the coronavirus climate. Lovely pub location but once bitten twice shy. We went be back in a hurry to eat there...
