Have visited here for food and drinks several times before and loved it, hence we keep returning, however on this occasion we left extremely deflated We arrived with everything as we'd normally expect, greeted by the lovely friendly lady on the desk who acknowledged our reservation and said we were upstairs, this is where it all started to go wrong, we've never been seated upstairs before. We reached the restaurant upstairs and was greeted by a waitress who seemed a little flustered because our table wasn't ready, although there were other empty tables available. After an awkward 5 minutes we were seated at one of the empty tables. We visited for the Sunday lunch especially as we'd never had it before. The waitress returned with the menus, which were accidentally dropped on the table, accidents happen we completely understand but there wasn't an apology, the menus are on clipboards so caused quite a clatter. We were then told there was no lamb left. By the time the waitress came back we were ready to order food and drink all in one go, we ordered 2 pints of Guinness and the Sharing Roast. The Guinness, we have had countless pints of Guinness in here (always downstairs) and I'd like to say you serve one of the best pints of Guinness in Leeds! Not this day! The pints were brought over, I nearly spat it back out, I believe it still had line cleaner in it, it tasted very medicinal which is a cause for concern. We alerted the waitress straight away and she was expecting there to be a problem, she said the barrel had been changed and it hadn't been run through. We asked for 2 more, but requested them from downstairs as there was no way I was drinking anymore from that pump. Instead of bringing us 2 pints, she brought us 2 halves (as if we were going to complain again I guess?), she said let me know when you're ready for the next one and I'll go fetch it so we both said you may as well bring it now as we ordered 2 pints not halves. Much better pint, just like we're used to and no taste of line cleaner! Next the food turns up, but no cutlery which we had to ask for, we were then only brought half the cutlery so had to wait for a full set each. The food was a little disappointing, again not what we're used to from The Adelphi. To say it was a sharing Roast I don't think this was reflected in the volume of food, the Yorkshires felt like they weren't homemade, the best bit was the tasty pork belly, the rest was borderline average, again disappointing from previous experiences. We struggled to get anyone's attention to pay the bill so ended up paying at the bar. We left very deflated as this is not The Adelphi we know, very disappointing experience. Will return to give you another go as we're hoping this was just a bad day and like I say we have never had a bad experience here, you're always spot on. Please check your lines properly before serving...
Read moreI had gone for a leaving do for a work friend and we booked a table on the second floor. Staff seemed lovely at first but then as the night started properly and the appetisers came out, staff were rude and slammed plates down. One of our guests had suffered a seizure the night before so couldn’t make it and they assumed we were lying (we are NHS workers, we wouldn’t lie about that). At first, before the food came out a tall lanky server said “you know what? Don’t worry about the other person we will still bring the food out but we will knock the price off so that you only pay for 9 people.” We thought that that was lovely and continued with the night. Later on however, at the end of the night, they sent someone we hadn’t even been served by to come and tell us that this isn’t what happened and we were made to look like liars again. I am very disappointed with the service here and my colleague heard the servers saying “I can’t wait for them to leave.” If I come again I would like to hope I don’t bump into those rude, clearly dissatisfied with life, servers ever as that ruined the atmosphere of what could have been a very classy meal. They turned the music up very loud at one point too at the beginning and considering we were the only table up there it was completely unnecessary and the table that arrived after us seemed to be treated either the same or better, no idea, but do not recommend the Adelphi. Food was the only good part and even then they don’t cater for everyone so another guest wasn’t able to come due to the fact they asked you to sign an NDA almost basically taking the responsibility off their shoulders if the person with specific dietary requirements got ill …....
Read moreArrh, The Adelphi - a good old traditional Leeds boozer with a rich heritage. It's a shame therefore that, judging by my recent experience, drinkers are no longer welcome there ...unless that is, you're also having a meal. Sunday 6th July, I had a little time to kill before meeting a friend in town, so I popped in for a pint. The small bar at the front was very busy and all the seats were taken. So, after getting my drink, I went wandering to find somewhere else to sit and relax. I crossed the corridor and tried the other room at the front - but before my buttocks even touched the seat, I was somewhat abruptly shouted at from across the room, and informed that it was diners only in that area. Feeling a little miffed and humiliated, I walked back out of the room - and it soon became clear that the other rooms in the pub were also reserved for diners only (apart from the original small bar at the front in which "drinkers" were penned in like sheep). I ended up having to drink my pint in the corridor, feeling quite dejected. I'm 55 years old, and can honestly say that I have never felt so unwelcome in a pub before. It seems to me that The Adelphi has an identity crisis - It's a pub that thinks it's a restaurant! I appreciate that these days, pubs need to serve food in order to survive - But that shouldn't be at the expense of traditional pub-goers who simply want a drink - and who sadly this pub are treating as second class customers. An unwelcoming pub doesn't deserve to be in business. I...
