Despite being a Star(Heineken) tenancy, this excellent traditional ale house has always resembled a free house due to the wide range of quality cask-conditioned ales on its 11 handpumps. However, I have noticed a recent sad decline in both range and quality - even had to return a rancid Bombadier yesterday! Heineken have kicked out Taylors BB Boltmaker & St Austell Proper Job now no more. Why would you put on ubiquitous Doom Bar in a great pub like this when its fans can drink it for 1.61 less at the JDW down the road? But I've been in a couple of times recently when the big lad behind the bar was more interested in his mobile phone than serving customers. Also I prefer dark beers but find there isn't always a dark beer on other than Old Peculiar, whereas if I walk round the corner to the Old Cock, there is usually a choice of 2 ever changing dark ales in perfect condition & always a warm welcome. Read moreThe new lads are pleasant and attentive. Special mention to Nathan who is always chatty and efficient. Well kept booze, clean, tidy, and welcoming. Can't really knock it. If they can all cope well with a full reopening and folk at the bar and not just table service.....I'll gladly add the fifth star....
